Third Floor Common Room, Friday Evening

Thanks to a laundry...incident, Dawn was wearing the t-shirt she'd borrowed from Dean after the Meerkat cabin theft, which was way too long for her, and the skirt she'd ~~stolen~~ borrowed from Buffy before she left Cleveland, which was way too short. Not unlike Buffy, come to think of it.

Just so people would think it was intentional, though, she put up a small sign, hastily written on notebook paper and stuck to the door of the common room.

In other news, she was trying to learn her domesticated canine vocabulary for class on Monday.

"Because I stupidly assumed that an impartial observer would be better at giving me advice than Dean."

"And did you get the advice you needed?" She asked, chewing on her lip.

"Not from him," Sam replied. "But last night, when I actually did talk to Dean, he gave me some good advice."

"Oh. Good." She wasn't going to ask, even if her curiosity was killing her.

"Do you want to know what it was?" he asked, sounding much more calm than he felt.

"Yes," she admitted quietly, eyes downcast.

For once, Sam didn't feel like he should have been looking anywhere but at her. "He said I should use this conversation as an opening to explain that you were the girl I was asking about, and to finally admit that I like you."

"He...me....finally????" Dawn wasn't anywhere close to making sense.

Sam bit his lip nervously, nodding. "I say finally because this isn't really a sudden thing. I just haven't said anything about it," he admitted. "I didn't want to screw things up."

Dawn was extremely torn between jumping up and down and squeeing like a mad moron in the middle of the common room and running upstairs to e-mail Buffy. Buffy. Sam's girlfriend. Darn it. "So why tell me now?"

"Because...I'm not sure if I would have the courage to say it later," he replied. "Because liking you is making me so crazy that I thought Barbossa could give me good advice. And because I've started to get the idea that maybe you might like me too."

Well, there went Dawn's future career as an undercover cop. Or a spy. And wow, she thought she might remember Sam saying those things, and the way he looked when he was saying them, for a very, very long time.

She took a deep breath and met his eyes, then said quietly, "You didn't get the wrong idea, Sam."

There was a difference between imagining Dawn saying something like that, and actually hearing it, and Sam finally realized how big that difference was when he started having trouble coming up with anything coherent to say. "Really? Because I was starting to wonder if maybe it was all just crazy wishful thinking in my head."

She shook her head. "I didn't say anything because you were happy with Buffy and I didn't want to bother you with it."

She took another deep breath and looked away for this next part, though. Dawn spoke quietly enough that Sam might not hear her. "I broke up with Dean...because I couldn't stop thinking about kissing you. It wasn't fair to him."

"I'm not...I'm not unhappy with Buffy, but I'm not happy either," he admitted. "Buffy's great, but while she was gone, I kept thinking about you. And now she's back, and I'm still thinking about you."

He watched her as she looked away, listening carefully. "Were you thinking about wanting to? Or about when we did, with the mindswap weirdness?"

She nodded. "Yes. To both."

"I remember kissing you," he said, rambling a little. "I mean, I remember the whole weekend, really. But I remember how nice it felt to kiss you, and I thought that maybe that was because I thought I was Dean, but I think it was just because it was you, and that's why it was right."

Dawn blinked a little at that and pushed her hair behind her ears. She'd never been anyone's right person before. "While we were...I didn't do much thinking at all. And there was the whole 'wow, you're tall' issue. But I liked it, a lot. And then, I knew how you tasted, and how it felt when you kissed me, and I couldn't not know, not that I would have wanted forgetfulness to happen."

Sam took a chance and moved a little closer to her, looking as if to size them both up. "Yeah, I guess the height difference would be memorable," he said, laughing softly. "I liked it too. And as much as I would love to lose most of the memories of that weekend, that's one I like holding on to."

Dawn took a step closer, too, which forced her to tilt her head back to look up at Sam. "Wasn't just the height difference that made it memorable. And now that I'm not dating Dean, I don't feel as guilty about remembering." She smiled at him.

"I can understand that. I felt kind of guilty too when you were with Dean," Sam said. "But on the other hand, it was a really good kiss."

Yep. Now she just had to feel guilty about Buffy. "It was. My toes curled." And okay, maybe she didn't have to tell him everything.

There was no way Sam was going to stop grinning any time soon, not with the knowledge that he'd done something that well. "Obviously, I'm going to have to remember what I did so that I can replicate that feeling for you. Um, if you want that, I mean. Once I've..." He wanted to say once he'd talked to Buffy, but he wasn't sure if bringing her up was a good idea.

"Um," Dawn knew she was grinning dopily at Sam now, and she couldn't make herself stop, "yeah, that would be nice. Or way beyond nice. I'm going to need how to learn how to walk in high heels or carry a box around. I mean, if you wouldn't mind kissing me again. I wouldn't want to force you."

"Once you've...oh, right," she realized Sam meant that he needed to talk to Buffy and wondered if it was too late to track her pseudo-sister down.

"Oh yeah, because it would be such a hardship to kiss you again," he said, teasing. "Maybe we could invest in some strong boxes or something."

"Right," he said quietly. "I should probably talk to Buffy tomorrow. I should have talked to her sooner, really. I don't think I'm being a very good boyfriend right now."
