Third Floor Common Room, Saturday Evening

After finishing her homework for the week, Dawn went to the common room and decided to indulge herself. She had a bowl of rainbow sherbet and was flipping through channels.

Oooh, kittens! Or, well, lions, but baby ones. She watched happily, although an occasional "awww, kitty..." escaped.

"Nah," Dean said, flopping down on the couch beside her. "I've been out and about since this morning. Went to the mainland with my Dad." He grinned widely. "He let me drive for a while."

"Oh yeah? Neat!" Dawn grinned back. "How'd you do?"

"Great," Dean enthused. "The Impala is like the perfect car. Driving it is like nothing else."

Dawn giggled. "You're in looooooooove," she teased.

"Damn straight. When I get a chance, I'll take you out in it. You'll see."

Dawn looked a little skeptical.

Dean rolled his eyes. "Trust me on this. Don't be a doubter. The engine purrs." He glanced at the tv. "Like a lion."

"Don't be a doubter?" Dawn laughed out loud. "And you're entirely too funny about this."

Dean looked momentarily hurt, but then grinned again. "Maybe, but that car's practically part of the family."

"Oh yeah?" Dawn's expression may have indicated that she was wondering exactly how long Dean and Sam's dad had owned the car and trying not to wonder whether they'd been conceived in the back seat.

"Yeah. Dad had it even before he met Mom." He grinned again, more softly this time. "I think the car might have been one of the things that attracted her."

"This must be some car," Dawn smirked.

"You'll see," Dean assured her.

"Is this something I should be doing with Sam?" Dawn teased, wiggling her feet in front of her. "I mean, if the power of this car is so significant..."

"Couldn't hurt," Dean advised. "Though I think Sammy just takes the car for granted."

Privately, Dawn thought that if the car had the power Dean said it did, he might not take it for granted so much by the time they were done looking at it. "Why do you think that?"

Dean shrugged. "He doesn't really get excited about it. It's just something that's always been there for him. It's something that's always been there for me too, but..."

"But what?"

"I remember the house we had before... before. Sammy doesn't." Dean shrugged. "So he can take the Impala for granted in a way I can't."

"How so?" Dawn asked, leaning her head on his shoulder, then continued, "And what was your house like?"

"Sammy doesn't remember home so he doesn't remember losing home," Dean explained, shifting a little to accomodate Dawn's head on his shoulder. "And home was like... it was big. warm. Two stories. I had my own room across the hall from Sammy's nursery." He grinned. "Had racecar wallpaper and everything. It was really cool. And there was this huge tree beside the house. I couldn't wait until I got bigger and was able to climb it."

"Sounds nice," she sighed, "My house had a big front window. I used to like to sit on the couch and wait for Buffy to get home."

"There was a big window in the living room in our house too," Dean recalled. "But the couch was on the other side of the room. And that was where the tv was too. And Dad's chair, it was one of those recliners." Deam smiled bittersweetly. "I used to curl up with him in it and we'd watch tv together."

"A little big for that now," she teased. "Unless they make double recliners."

Dean snickered. "Yeah. No, no more curling up with Dad in a recliner. That would just be weird now."
