Third Floor Common Room, Saturday Evening

After finishing her homework for the week, Dawn went to the common room and decided to indulge herself. She had a bowl of rainbow sherbet and was flipping through channels.

Oooh, kittens! Or, well, lions, but baby ones. She watched happily, although an occasional "awww, kitty..." escaped.

Dawn waved to Aeryn. "Hi! We've got lions and ice cream and idle conversation."

"Is this like the meerkat show?" Aeryn wonders, frowning at the TV.

"There was a meerkat show?" Dawn had missed it, "and I guess so? Except these are lion cubs. See how they look just like little kittens, but big and they can eat your head."

"The only kittens I've had any experience with are the ones that attached themselves to me when we had the mummy problem," she says. "If they had been able to eat someone's head, I may have had more tolerance."

"They're totally cute, and they purr when they're happy," Dawn explained. "And you're in favor of animals that eat people?"

"They're more interesting," she says. "I've decided against trying to teach the shark to eat people, so I suppose that's something."

"Shark?" Dawn asked, eyes wide.

"It's really a fish," Aeryn clarifies. "It's called a bala shark. It's in a bigger tank, away from the sea monkeys, and apparently doesn't bite."

"You know a lot about them. Do you raise fish as a hobby?" Hey, it could happen.

Aeryn almost laughs. "No. All I know is what John told me when he said he was going to buy a shark. And I know that it swims around all day. I can't picture me raising anything. Especially fish."

"Oh, yeah? Howcome?"

"I'm not that nuturing," says Aeryn, thinking that too was probably obvious to people on other planets like Jack said.

Dawn shrugged. "You could be. But there's nothing that says you have to be all nurture girl either."

"I thought that was a prerequisite," she says.

"For what, being a girl?" Dawn blinked at Aeryn a couple of times. "Not hardly. There's lots of girls that can't or don't want to nurture. My sister's not great at it."

"Oh, not when it comes to gender," she says, because she knows she isn't alone in the not-nuturing thing. Parker comes to mind. "Just in the general sense that nuturing seems to be necessary in taking care of things."

"It does help with that, yes," Dawn admitted. "But you can learn how to do that."

"Will that class be offered next semester?" Aeryn asks. She shrugs. "There's not really a reason to learn that, though."

"Maybe? And there is if you feel like you need to learn," Dawn shrugged back.

"I don't really want to ask why I'd need to learn, do I?" Aeryn says, because she can think of one reason and that's a little eep-worthy, still.

"Probably not? Unless you decide you want a cat or something. Or your boyfriend turns into one."

Aeryn shakes her head. "We have two dozen sea monkeys, a shark, a DRD, a talking toaster and a hig-wiggle Sandy Clouds- don't ask. No more... things." She pauses. "I don't think he's been a cat yet. But unless Rita Skeeter comes back, he probably won't turn into anything anyway."
