Third Floor Common Room, Saturday Evening

After finishing her homework for the week, Dawn went to the common room and decided to indulge herself. She had a bowl of rainbow sherbet and was flipping through channels.

Oooh, kittens! Or, well, lions, but baby ones. She watched happily, although an occasional "awww, kitty..." escaped.

"Hey, long time, no talk," Dean said, grinning at her. "How goes things?"

"They're going all right. For the time being," she says, giving him a little smile in return. "How have you been?"

"Pretty good. My Dad's here teaching now and he let me drive the car today." Yes, that was something Dean was going to mention to pretty much everyone he talked to tonight because, dude. He drove the Impala.

She frowns a little and asks, "The car?"

"Yeah. My Dad, he has this totally cool '67 Chevy Impala. Sammy and I practically grew up in it," Dean explained. "I think I've wanted to drive it since I was at least four."

"Congratulations, then," she says, and kind of understands that, actually. "Was it everything you thought it would be?"

"Pretty much yeah."

Aeryn smiles a little and says, "You like having your father around?"

"Hell yeah," Dean replied. "It's just been the three of us for so long... it feels wrong when he's gone too long."

"Good," she says. "Most people here don't get to have that. You're lucky."

Dean grinned. "I know. I mean there's a lot that's sucked about our lives, but... Yeah. We have each other, corny as that sounds."

"I have no idea what 'corny' means, but it sounds all right," she says.

"Yeah, it does," Dean agreed. "What about you?" he asked. "Do Sabacens have families like us humans do?"

Aeryn shakes her head. "It's a bad idea to have family units as you do when you're born in order to probably be killed in battle. We have parents, but don't know them."

"Family units here must seem really weird to you then."

"I understand the concept well enough," she says. "It makes sense. It's just new."

Dean tried to not make assumptions based on his own beliefs and experiences, but the idea of not having a family seemed so lonely to him. "What's it like growing up that way?" he asked.

"Not lonely," she says, because that's always everyone's first question. "You grow up with people your own age, learn together, train together, don't get too attached because you're going to end up reassigned anyway... Not very private, though."

Dean smiled slightly. "I get the no privacy thing. Sammy and I have been pretty much in each other's back pocket our entire lives. Hell, coming here, this is the first time we've not shared a room since I was four."

"Is that easier or a different kind of difficult?" she wonders.

Dean considered. "Both?" he finally said. "It's nice to have some privacy when I want it, but it's weird -- especially when we first got here -- to be able to go whole days sometimes without seeing Sammy." He grinned suddenly. "But it's not like when things get rough we don't end up bunking together again regardless."

"I don't know of many siblings that are that close," she admits. "It's good to see."

Dean shrugged. "We've been all we had for most of our lives." He smiled slightly. "Our own self enclosed never be reassigned fighting unit, I guess. Makes you close."
