The Roof, Tuesday Night

Yep, it was that time again -- time to go up to the roof, smoke, and brood over what to get people for Christmas.

Okay, actually Anders was brooding over his conversation with Parker yesterday, but still. There was also Christmas-shopping brooding going on. Look, he could multitask, all right? Two kinds of brooding and smoking, all at once. There was even pacing back and forth.

Skilled, that guy. Really.

That only caused Anders to break out into a slow smirk. "But you're into me, apparently."

"Remains to be seen," Bel said. "Still waiting to see how well you keep that mouth shut." Pause. "Unless I want it open."

More smirking. "I'll have you know I didn't say a damn word to Parker last night."

"She hasn't tried to lynch me yet today, so that's a point in your favor," Bel noted. "So far so good."

Anders put the cigarette back into his mouth, raising both eyebrows suggestively. "I'm damn good."

"I'll be the judge of that," Bel purred.

"Promises, promises," Anders snorted.

Bel stepped closer to Anders. "I don't make promises I don't keep," he said. "And I haven't promised anything...yet."

Anders took a step or two of his own closer to Bel. "Does that all depend on my good behavior?" he asked softly.

"Good's boring," Bel said, flicking his cigarette off into the darkness. "It's so much more fun being bad, isn't it?" And it was so much more satisfying being non-flaily, non-foolish, non-weak.

"Yes," Anders replied firmly. "I'm sick of people trying to keep me in line."

"That's the spirit," Bel said. He circled around Anders with a gleam in his eye.

"You don't try to do that to me," Anders added. Then, with added scorn, "Unlike some people I can think of."

Bel seized on the displeasure and tried to flame it. "You're old enough and smart enough to make decisions all on your own," he said encouragingly. "Not fair to treat you otherwise."

"Damn right it's not fair," Anders agreed, impulsively reaching out to clap a hand on Bel's shoulder. "How come you're the only one who can see that?"

"You got me," Bel said, shrugging a little. "I don't know, they must have reasons of their own for wanting to keep you down."

"So stupid. I don't even see why they care," Anders replied. Annoyed, he threw his cigarette butt down hard enough to make sparks fly from it when it hit the ground. "But whatever. You don't do that crap to me. It's a nice change."

"Some girls are just the over-protective type," Bel said. "Me, I don't like it when people try to put safeguards around me. I like to do what I want and deal with it on my own terms. Take risks." He light up a new cigarette and grinned at Anders over the flames. "Live dangerously."

"That's what I want to do, and the hell with them if they think different," agreed Anders. "Lords. Maybe I shouldn't even bother telling any of them anything again."

Well . . . except Bridge, maybe. There could be a Bridge-exception, since his best friend wasn't trying to tell him what to do.

"Good idea," Bel said. "Show them you can think for yourself." He put his hand on Anders's shoulder. "Make your own decisions about what you wanna do, and who you wanna do it with."

Anders looked at him steadily. "I already have, and they think I'm crazy for it. So frak 'em -- their loss."

"Worry too much about what other people think and you'll never have any fun," Bel said. "So I'm likin' this attitude of yours."

"Someone who does, finally. Thank the gods," Anders drawled. "Nice to know you got my back on this."

"Oh, I got your back all right," Bel said, tilting his head and moving to take a look at said backside.

"You do seem to be kind of attached to it," Anders said, his smirk growing broader. "Or want to be, anyway."
