Third Floor Common Room - Thursday Morning

Katara had woken up early and slipped out of her dorm room quietly. She considered going outside for a moment, but she decided to explore the floor she'd ended up on.

Finding herself in a big open room with several couches and tables and quite a few big boxes she had no idea about, she up a small floppy book made out of shiny paper and began to flip through it, looking at the pictures.

"My best friend at home. And how much does it suck that he's seven years behind and I can't call him from here?"

"Have you tried?" Dawn asked. "There's some kind of handwavey thing going on with the island that sometimes make communication possible. I e-mail my friends and family back in 2003 kind of regularly. Real letters also work."

Marco shook his head. "It's a bit more complicated than that. Even if I could send him anything? I couldn't say anything."

"How come?" Not that she was nosy or anything.

"Um...because I'm so cute?" Marco tried for a charming grin.

It was a good grin, but Dawn was friends with Alec and knew Jack Harkness. "Is that the only reason?"

"The aliens that are trying to take over the human race back where I'm from are watching all communications in our town because they're fairly certain that's where we're headquartered. Also, everyone but my best friends back home is certain that I'm dead." Marco grinned. "Or because he'd never believe half the things that go on in this school."

"Wow." Dawn blinked. "Aliens, huh? You, um, know we've got good ones here? And you don't have to talk about being nearly dead if you don't want."

"I'm not nearly dead." Marco said cheerfully. "My entire family is considered dead. I even went to the funeral. It was kind of funny, I never knew so many people even knew I existed." He paused. "I wasn't the one who got killed, it was just a robot that looked like me. And I've met good aliens. The majority of them are. There's just a few races that are kind of annoying with their whole 'we want your bodies' kind of way. And not in the sexy one either."

Dawn smirked. Wow, Marco babbled like a pro. "Was it weird, going to your own funeral? And how come there was a robot that looked like you?" She leaned over and whispered, "Was there a vampire who wanted to have sex with you, but you wouldn't let him, so she made a sexbot that looked like you instead?"

Dawn grinned. "Real life, but not mine."

Marco's eyes were about to pop out. "How did you get dragged into it?"

"My sister, and my babysitter. Er, ish." She shrugged.

"You know what? There's a small, small chance your life might be odder than mine."

Dawn grinned and rose to the challenge. "Weirdest person you ever dated?"

Marco tried for a grin. "Well, my life doesn't really leave much time for the dating game, but there was this alternative world where I was dating Rachel..."

"No dating?" Dawn tried not to look overly horrified and immediately started trying to figure out who she could fix him up with. "Who's Rachel?"

"She's...my best friend's psycho cousin. So kind of a friend, kind of a person who freaks me out because she's mental. And kind of really hot."

"Is that what you look for in a someone?" Dawn asked, totally taking mental notes by this point. "Girl, mental, really hot?"

"Girl, hot, I'll more than happily skip the mental part." Marco paused. "Is Parker seeing anyone? Cause we talked last night and I think she likes me."

"Parker? Like, Parker Parker?" Dawn had met the other girl a grand total of once, she thought. "Um, I have no idea, sorry."
