Second Floor Common Room - Wednesday Night

Kawalsky wasn't just in the common room. He was in the common room with enough junk food to last the night, pillows, all the blankets he could find and a bunch of chairs. The TV was playing the third hour of a Rescued by the Alarm marathon. It was the one where Bessie didn't get into the college she wanted and Shriek kept getting into the oddest colleges, so Bessie kept freaking out at everyone and scaring them with her giant feet.

Kawalsky was only half-watching it anyway. He was busy trying to make a giant room fort that covered the TV.

"Er-- sure," Haruhi said, grabbing the nearest chair. Well, why not; she'd participated in sillier events back home with the club. "We're not going for anything too difficult here, are we?"

"I don't think we can have anything too complicated with pillows, blankets and chairs. But as long as there's two ways out and we can fit the TV in, and it's big enough for a slumber party, we're set." Sometimes he really loved being in high school. "I'm Charlie, by the way."

Haruhi slipped out a chuckle; students didn't seem to change no matter where in the world you went. "That sounds reasonable," she replied. "I'm Haruhi."

"Good to meet ya," he replied. "You ever seen this show?" He jerked his head towards the TV.

"I don't think so," Haruhi said. "I don't watch much TV, and even then they might not show it where I come from."

"Then keep in mind that this is about 15 years old, no one else dresses like that anymore and Bessie's annoying no matter what episode she's in. And Shriek - that's the weird guy with the curly hair - he's awesome."

Haruhi nodded, attempting to keep all that noted. "Nothing better on TV?" she assumed.

"Probably, but bad TV usually leads to more fun conversations when you're around snarky people. And Fandom? Full of snark."

"Ah, I've noticed before," Haruhi said. "Not a bad thing, I guess. I prefer not to waste my time on such things, most of the time."

"When the world's...worlds are crazy, sometimes all you can do is find a defensive mechanism. Snark works. Makes life funnier."

"We could start by saying that Bessie character is somewhat annoying," Haruhi began, nodding towards the TV.

"Boy, is she!" Kawalsky agreed. "And that hair is pretty scary."

"Did people really style their hair like that back then?"

"I want to say no and deny that the 80s ever happened, but I'm afraid I have to say yes. And hers wasn't the worst. Then there was the overuse of denim and blue eyeshadow and mascara - not always just on girls - and Wham! The band."

Haruhi blinked. "I never understood why people insist on following fashion trends."

"Me neither. If it's comfortable and it doesn't smell, it's wearable. And hair? Well," he ruffled his shortish hair. "As long as it's outta my eyes."

"I agree," Haruhi said. "Hair's easier to take care of when it's shorter, anyway."

"I've never had really long hair, but it was a little longer when I was younger and that was bad enough. I dunno how people deal with it being past their shoulders. It'd get tangled and weird."

"I got gum in mine about a year ago and kept it short since."

"That'd be one reason to do it. Gum can get pretty messy. I'm surprised no one around here has got anything gunky in their air since the jello dragons. There's usually stuff spitting gunk out."

"Again with the jello dragons," Haruhi thought aloud. "Tell me, how often do such events usually happen?"

"About once a semester. I think it's a conspiracy by the school board to keep us on our toes for the apocalypse."

"Huh." Haruhi only looked at him funny. "Well, unlike what seems to be just about everyone here, I don't have any of the 'special powers' going around, so I think I'll stay indoors when it occurs again."

"I don't have any special powers either. Everyone helps out some way though. Fighting, research, supplies. Made plenty of good friends those weekends." He frowned. "Hey, they've always happened on weekends. I never noticed that before. Weird."
