[2nd Floor Common Room, Thursday Morning]

Alec had apparently decided to take Hades' announcement to heart today, as he sat in the common room kitchen with a giant pot on the stove and many weetiny penguins running around. The stove was on, the water coming to a boil, and Alec was hungry.

"You're going to boil them?!" The penguin in Layla's arms squeaked as she pulled it closer unconsciously. "You can't! They're so tiny and harmless and eating meat is bad! So bad! Especially when it's adorable!"

"I like meat," Alec said simply. "Why does it being adorable mean I shouldn't eat it?"

"Well, you shouldn't eat any meat, because all animals have feelings. But penguins are especially not food. How would you feel if someone decided you looked tasty, and tried to eat you?"

"I'm meant to eat meat," Alec said, folding his arms. "And if something could catch me and kill me, then I probably deserve to be eaten."

"But there are so many healthier options for eating than meat," Layla protested. "Especially penguins. Look at these little guys! How can you look at them and see food?"

Alec blinked. "I eat other things too, but meat is kind of important in my diet," he said. "Just because they're cute doesn't mean you shouldn't eat them."

"Okay, I don't speak penguin, so I'm not totally sure what this little guy could say if he'd talk to me, but I'm pretty sure it would be something like 'Hi there, Alec! I'm Pepe the Penguin! Please don't eat me, for I am small and not very meaty, and there is lots of other food in the fridge!'"

Yes, she gave the penguin his own little voice. Desperate times, desperate measures and all.

Alec blinked at Layla. "That's why I was getting a whole bunch of them together. And they'll probably be gone by tomorrow, so how many times will I get a chance to try eating penguins?"

"So, you're going to kill a harmless animal just to see what it tastes like?" Layla pouted at Alec "I'll give you a hint - they probably taste like chicken. Most animals that are not cows or pigs or some other form of meat taste like chicken."

"We call it the food chain," Alec informed her. "And rabbits don't taste like chicken. Neither do grasshoppers or squirrels."

"I'm surprisingly unbothered by the idea of eating grasshoppers," Layla replied. "But rabbits and squirrels are not for eating either! I think the radio squirrels would take particular offense to knowing you've eaten one of their brethren."

While she was saying this, she was trying to shuffle penguins protectively behind her. She wasn't very subtle though.

"Animals are made of meat and meat is for eating," Alec said firmly, watching Layla with a frown. "What are you doing?"

"Animals are for cuddling and playing with and having as pets and not for eating!" Layla replied. "I'm preparing to protect the penguins from you."

"Predators eat prey," Alec said, reaching out to snag a penguin and toss it in the bowl before Layla herded it away.

"Make sure you grab the one behind you," she said, pointing and hoping he'd turn around.

"Huh?" Alec obligingly looked over his shoulder for the nonexistant penguin.

Layla grabbed the penguin out of the bowl and set him down on the ground, flapping at him. "Run! Flee! Waddle to safety!"
