Third Floor Common Room, Sunday Brunch

Dawn decided the time was right to attempt to make french toast. What could be better on Easter Sunday than brunch, right? So she'd handwavily bought some good bread, eggs, sugar, and vanilla, and was currently trying to figure out the right proportions of things. The griddle wasn't heating yet.

Being Dawn, in addition to syrup, she'd also bought strawberry jam, nutella, tobasco sauce, chocolate chips, walnuts, bananas, raspberry sauce, caramel, and peanut butter. There were also bacon and ham available if someone wanted to make them, and plenty of extra eggs and bread in case someone didn't want to go the french toast route.

She sipped at her pineapple juice and contemplated going to look up a recipe.

[ooc: Open like an open thing! Food is completely moddable.]

"I have a clan now!" Luke said, bouncing. "Or a father and a sister, at least. Does that count as a clan? We hail from Tatooine, a desert planet far, far away. Well, Father and I do. Leia's from Alderaan, but it blew up and that's a whole other long, long story."
the_merriest: (not now thunder!)

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-08 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Rikku clapped her hands and bounced with him. "I totally think it does! My clan would just be me and Brother and Pops and Yunie, who's not an Al Bhed but she still counts 'cause we're the only family she's got. And oooh, the desert?! Bikanel was a desert, too! We'd go out digging in the sand and building machina and looking for ruins. Always so nice and warm."

"Sorry Leia's planet blew up. That's awful! Is she okay!?"

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"How many suns did you have?" Luke asked, bouncing more. "We had two."

He made a face. "Leia was...she wasn't on the planet, but she watched it destroyed from space to make her talk. It didn't work."

Rikku giggled. "Just one! I didn't know you could have more than one! Ooooh, did they go in different paths? Did you have, like, two sets of day and night?!"

And gasped. "Whoa, they did!? That's CRAZY! They just told us they were executing us and dumped us in a sewer!" She looked at him. "Government, right?"

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Depending on the seasons," Luke said as his mun makes things up liek woah, wtf, Lucas, wtf, "yeah. Most of the time, it was just incredibly hot--they stuck together most of the year."

He made a face. "Former government, but yes. Turns out blowing up a planet upsets a lot of people."
the_merriest: (grrrrr)

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Whoa, that's just weird! Although I wouldn't mind the hot. Honestly, the snow here! It's like Gagazet all over again!"

She shook her head. "You mean, they actually got caught? Our government would have just blamed the Al Bhed and used that as a reason to blow more of our stuff up." She shrugged. "They were really good at covering stuff up."

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
"They tried that, but Alderaan was a peaceful, weaponless planet," Luke said. "There aren't that many delusional people in my galaxy."

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-09 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Rikku shook her head. "Yevon didn't have that problem. Upside of making a religion tag along with it. No questioning things, you aren't a heathen traitor, are you?"

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
"They went the opposite direction by banning a religion outright," Luke said, jaw clenching. "That backfired, too."
the_merriest: (back)

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-09 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Rikku shrugged. "I don't think I'd mind that so much. There are people here who claim to be gods and have religions and it's just parlor tricks and more lies so they can keep people from questioning basic truths. Why think if your religion can do it for you? Here's what's right, here's what's wrong, and kill anyone who disagrees. It's not like they're human anyway."

There was a bitter laugh at the end there.

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Luke frowned. "That's not how the Jedi work," he said quietly. "They stood for justice and truth...and were a threat to the Emperor's quest for power. So he had them destroyed."
the_merriest: (stoic)

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-09 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
"That's your religion? The Jedi?" Rikku nodded, still skeptical. "The Yevonites thought that their religion was teaching people how to life simply and in harmony with the world, so that Sin - the monster, I mean - would go away for good. And really, Yevon was Sin, and they got rid of anybody who found out. Or didn't follow in the first place."

She closed her eyes. "If they weren't trying to control people, then ... what was the point of it? The religion, I mean."

Her tone wasn't malicious; she was honestly curious why anyone would start one if you weren't going to get something out of it.

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
"You should really ask my father about some of this," Luke admitted. "He's the Ethics teacher and has been a Jedi a lot longer that I've been." He sat down and scooted closer to Rikku. "From what my teachers told me--and it was done on the fly--no one was supposed to be a Jedi after the Empire, after all--they weren't interested in power. They sought knowledge. It wasn't really a religion. It was a recognition of the Force, something that's as real as gravity."
the_merriest: (thinking hard or hardly thinking)

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-09 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh. Okay, yeah, not a religion makes more sense." Rikku said, nodding a bit. She doesn't have issues with religion. She has entire magazines.

"So, there's - a Force to everything? I guess that sounds kinda neat." She shrugged. "How do you ... I mean, can you control it?"

"Whoa, your dad's here? That's gotta be nice for you. I mean, I hope so. Unless he's like my dad." She giggled. "But he's not following you around telling you not to talk to any girls and cussing, so I bet not."

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Luke chuckled. "Hardly. We don't really know each other. I thought he was dead most of my life." He rolled his eyes. "Another long story."
the_merriest: (pensive)

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-09 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I'm sorry." Rikku bit her lip. "I mean, about you thinking he was dead. My mom died when I was little. It must be nice to have him back."

She smiled ruefully. "I'm starting to think a lot of us here have long stories."

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's....weird to have him back," Luke admitted. "I grew up with my aunt and uncle and spent most of my life thinking I was an orphan. In the last six months I've lost them, gained a twin sister and a dad. My life's a little confusing."

Which was understating things by quite a considerable margin, but Luke was all about being polite.

"I'm sorry to hear about your mother," he continued.
the_merriest: (stoic)

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-09 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Whoa." Rikku shook her head. "I'm sorry about your aunt and uncle, but - getting the sister and the dad, that's pretty great. Although, yeah, confusing. But confusing in a good way. When you get people you love, that's ... you gotta stick tight to them, you know?"

"It's okay about my mom. My world ... I think it isn't like here. So many people here just ... I don't know. My mom's dead, and both of Yunie's parents, and Lulu's and Wakka's, too. Lots of my friends have both parents dead. And some of my friends are dead, too." She shrugged, trying to seem indifferent. "I think it's different here."

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Luke nodded. "It's not quite as...volatile...in this reality," he said. "I was one of three pilots to survive a battle at the end of the summer." His eyes stared off into the distance. "I've had more than enough loss for a lifetime."
the_merriest: (crestfallen)

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-09 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm so sorry." Rikku looked over at him, nodding slowly. "And ... yeah. It wasn't that bad but ... I have too." And wished there was something more she could say.

"I think ... my world is going to be different now. We changed it. We had to." She swallowed. "Dawn and I said we're gonna start a club. About how, you know, you save the world, really, and everyone else goes and has a party, and you ... you get to go to the funerals."

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Luke ran a hand through his hair. "I suck at small talk," he muttered.

He gave her a small smile. "Any t-shirts along with the club?" he asked.
the_merriest: (whoa cool)

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-09 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Rikku laughed. "I know, right? I'm usually more cheerful than this, honest. I bounce a lot." She shook her head. "Then I meet other people and go, 'Oooh, yeah, you too?' and we have conversations like this one. We should totally stop that."

She clapped her hands excitedly and did bounce at that. "Yes! That was the point! I mean, the name! It was gonna be 'I Saved the World and All I Got Was This Stupid T-Shirt.' And we were gonna make the t-shirts so that at least we'd have something, right?"

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I saved a galaxy," Luke said, eyes shining. "Can I have two t-shirts?"
the_merriest: (nudge nudge)

[personal profile] the_merriest 2007-04-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Rikku giggled. And bounced. "Oooh, really?! No way! Then totally! You can have two different colors and totally hold it over the rest of us, like, 'Oh, that's nice. I hope your 'world-saving' was very nice. SIGH.'"

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Luke giggled. "But won't such superiority get me kicked out of the club?"
