Chupacabra Campfire [Tuesday Evening]

One workshop on explosions, one more day spent avoiding Luke and Gavin's back at the campfire. He's not hiding this time, but he's still prepared to run should anyone mention quarters or tigers or 'angels.'

After his workshop, he'd gone into town and picked up ten bars of chocolate. Yes, ten. Look, they might taste different, okay? Of course, Gavin's not thinking of chocolate plus fire equals a mess. He's too busy trying to decide which to try first.

"You're making fun of me," he accused lightly. "If chocolate makes me go all...weird again, then I'm leaving."

Karal had a mouthful of chewy, ridiculously sweet stickiness and it took him a moment to be able to speak. "No, no, truly I'm not, Gavin. I promise," he said apologetically once his mouth was empty. "I'm certain it won't make you go weird. Well," he amended. "No weirder than a lot of sweets normally would, so no more talk of leaving."

"What's that one taste like?" Gavin asked, finishing off his candy.

"Good! Sweet! Very chewy and I think it has nuts." He took another bite - a smaller one - chewed and swallowed. "Yes, definitely nuts. It's very good, nothing like chocolate back home. When it found its way to Karse, it was just plain chcolate. None of these extras."

"I don't know if I've ever had something like this," Gavin admitted, picking up another candy bar. "I mean, I've had sweet but these are so...I don't know."

"Intense," he decided, taking another bite and chewing it thoughtfully. "As if they have taken all the possible flavours and compressed it down into one small bar."

"Would you eat one again?" Gavin asked, mentally taking notes.

"I believe I would," he said after a moment's thought. And another bite. "Though I think not very often. It really is quite sweet."

"Hurt your teeth sweet?" Gavin asked.

"And burn the back of your throat sweet. But in a pleasant way, however unlikely that may sound." Karal rested his chin in his hand and considered Gavin. "Are you conducting a survey to determine which of these is the best?"

"Is it obvious?" he asked and threw another bar at Karal. "That's got peanut butter or something in it."

Karal fumbled to catch the bar, laughing a little. "I think you're just waiting to see if something strange happens to me," he teased, opening the bar and smelling it tentatively.

...he hadn't thought Karal would guess that.

"I don't want anymore quarters bounced off my ass," he explained. "So, maybe."

"Quarters bounced off your...ass?" There was blushing as he asked that question. "I'm almost afraid to ask you to explain that."

"Luke bounced a coin off my...rear," Gavin said, coughing as he did so.

"Oh." Yes, more blushing and he held up the chocolate bar Gavin had thrown him. "Well, if this makes me think I'm a, a chicken, you have to promise to confine me to the cabin until it wears off."

"No," he said and grinned.

"See if I hide you under my bed," he muttered and nibbled warily on a corner, then paused - almost holding his breath - to see if anything would happen. "Tell me I am not a chicken? Please?"

"I'm sorry, Karal," he said solemnly, "you are, in fact, not a chicken."

Karal tossed the empty Snickers bar wrapper at him. Snickers wrappers were hardly effective projectiles, however, and it fluttered to the ground well short of it's target. "No thanks to you," he grumbled, but he was trying not to laugh. "This, despite its lack of chicken transforming properties, is extremely good. Far superior to the other one."

"Hey, if you want me to ask around for something that'll give you chicken like qualities, I will," he promised before biting into a candy bar himself. "This one has nuts in it too."

"No, I think I would prefer to remain human," he said decisively. "I might be allergic to feathers, and I do not wish to spend my time sneezing. This, however," he waved the bar, "was a very good idea."

"I think you'd be a good chicken," Gavin said, smiling around his candy bar.

Karal lowered his candy bar and just stared. "You think I would be a good chicken."

He laughed at that reaction. "Your face...you should see it right now."
