Gym, Flag Football Practice, Sunday Noon

There were painstakingly measured cone paths running up and down the length of the gym.  Today the players were going to run.

Once everyone appeared to be assembled, John made an announcement, "Okay guys, today we're gonna run sprints.  Let's see how fast all of you can run 100 meters."  He motioned to a box of stopwatches next to the sign-in sheet.  "Grab a stopwatch and time yourself.  You can also get in groups or pairs if you'd like.  If you have questions, your captains are available as always."

Evie jumped around in victory and glee for a minute, then leaned over Sokka, looking concerned, her hair brushing his face. "Do you want me to get you an orange? Or some water? And of course you will! Possibly." She smiled wickedly. "Maybe I'll let you win. Maybe?"

Sokka grinned, leaned up, and kissed her quickly, getting sweat all over.

"I can get my own water," he said, still panting. "And you are NOT going to let me win. I'm going to beat you. There's a difference."

"There is!" Evie grinned down at him gleefully, and carefully wiped the sweat off his forehead with her fingertips, turning pink herself. "I am so glad you never want me to pretend I can't do things. So very refreshing."

"What kind of insecure jerk would want you to pretend you can't do things?" Sokka asked.

"Far too many boys that I knew in England," Evie said, sitting back on her heels. "All boys were supposed to be better than all girls at sporting things, there. It didn't come up often, because I'm not good at most sports, but they didn't like it when I was smarter than them, either."

"Well, boys are supposed to be better," Sokka said, "because they're manly and girls are supposed to cook and stuff. But they're usually not."

He grinned and sat up. "Most of the people who beat me up are girls," he announced proudly.

...

"That... was supposed to come out differently than it did."

Evie had started to bridle at the first part of Sokka's speech, then relaxed as he qualified it. And giggled as he admitted that girls had beaten them up. "Were they girls like Aeryn Sun, and Molly? And really, I'm sure there's plenty of people who you've beaten up over time."

"Yeah, they were pretty bad-ass," he said. "Uh, do you know Rikku? And Katara?" He shrugged. "But yeah, I've beaten up all KINDS of people. Samurai fishmen and Fire Nation soldiers and all sorts of people. I AM a warrior."

"I know, or you wouldn't have your warrior's tail," Evie said, getting to her feet, and offering him a hand. "Katara's your sister, yes? Well, that makes sense. I can still push Jonathan around, when he's not paying attention. And yes, I've met Rikku, she's quite nice. Why was she trying to beat you up?"

Sokka looked a little sheepish. "I was trying to beat her up. She made fun of my hair."

"Oh, Sokka." Evie put her hands over her face, and then shook her head. "Not that she should have done that, at all. But really. You couldn't just, just-- I don't know, make fun of her hair back?"

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Sokka looked at her like she had grown an extra head. "Yeeeah. Because that would work."

Evie rolled her eyes. Boys. "Right, well, of course. There *are* better reasons for fighting, though. Although the honor of your hair must be defended, I suppose?"

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey, I spent a few months fighting to save the world and protect my friends," Sokka replied defensively. "I'm getting out of practice, though."

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
"True, true." Evie looked mollified. "Are there any classes to practice in, this session? I can't remember. Oh! What did you sign up for, this time?"

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Not fighting, I don't think?" Sokka said. "I signed up for... uh. Guns, and Blowing Stuff Up, and Stupid People. And.... No, I think that's it." He looked at her hopefully. "Are you in any of those?"

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Blowing Stuff Up!" Evie said, bouncing gleefully. "And Patriotism Yay, and Pie. I'm not much of a cook. But pie should be easy, don't you think?"

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, SWEET!!!" Sokka replied, also bouncing. "That class is going to be SO AWESOME. Professor Aly let me sit in on a class a few weeks ago and it ROCKED!"

He grinned at her. "If you make good pie, can I have some?"

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
"YAY!!" Evie did a little dance. "I met her, she's quite nice! I delivered a present to her from Professor Deadpool! Oh, we're going to have so much fun, I hope we both get into the class!" She tried to look prim, without any success. "And maaaybe. What kind of pies do you like?"

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Sokka thought about that. "Pretty much any kind of pie, really. All pies are good!"

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Evie gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Then when I have learned how to make a really good, un-burnt pie, with flaky crust, it'll be yours. Key lime, maybe!"

Re: Talk Amongst Yourselves

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Sokka blushed. "... Uhhhh. Yeah. I don't know what a key-lime is, but yeah. Sounds good."
