Second Floor Common Room - Tuesday Morning

Meg didn't have class until Wednesday but she didn't want to get in the habit of sleeping in all day so when she woke up she got dressed and decided to check out the common room. It wasn't long before she was digging around in the kitchen and soon after she had eggs, bacon and pancakes cooking on the stove.

She had heard about the food sharing thing and was doing her best to make enough for anyone who stopped in.

"Meg Manning." she said. "I'm pretty new so I haven't met a lot of people. Are you new too or have you been here for a while?"

"No, I'm new too," said Hoshi. "Completely new. I've never been to a school before."

"Wow." Meg said, raising an eyebrow. "Were you home schooled or something?"

"I used to study with tutors," explained Hoshi. "They told my parents that my IQ was so high that a normal school would hold me back. I would work with a tutor for a few hours in the morning, and then spend the rest of the day studying on my own." It was a pretty lonely existence, being left on your own all day to study, and Hoshi didn't sound too enthusiastic about it.

Meg thought that sounded kind of sucky but didn't want to put down Hoshi's education. "Are you glad to be in a regular school now?"

Not that Fandom was really a regular school.

"There's more people around," said Hoshi. "It's not so lonely, but it will take some getting used to." Not to mention that it's setting off her claustrophobia.

"I'm just getting used to it myself." Meg admitted. "This school is way different than my last one."

"You mean normal schools don't have classes about modeling clothes taught by self-proclaimed gods?" asked Hoshi.

Meg shook her head. "Not even close. Normal schools have classes about math and science taught by men and women wearing frumpy clothes."

"Sounds like the only think I was missing out on was interacting with other people," said Hoshi. "I'm not sure why my parents thought private tutors would be better for me. I studied the same math and science."

Of course, in Hoshi's case, she was learning differential equations and warp field dynamics by age 12.

"Well, there's a lot more distraction in public school." she said. Like guys. Stupid guys who broke your heart.

"I guess so," said Hoshi. "I didn't have a whole lot to distract me."

"Sometimes distraction is a good thing, sometimes it's bad." Meg said. "Everyone needs to do something other than study every once in a while."

Doing something other than studying? This was a new concept to Hoshi. "What do you do when you aren't studying?" she asked.

"Well, I cook or read a book for fun. Hang out with friends." she said. "I used to be a cheerleader and I did that a lot after school. Don't you do stuff for fun sometimes?"

"I read," said Hoshi, "but they're usually books my tutors picked out. Once in a while, thought, I was able to sneak a romance novel in there." Hoshi had never had friends to hang out with since she never got to meet kids her own age.
