Fifth Floor Common Room, Monday Evening

"Can you hand me the ginger?" Ronan asked, as he ground some spices with a mortar and pestle. "The fresh, I mean." The fragrant smells of cooking curry were already pervading the common room, and probably making their way through the rest of the dorms. When Isabel handed over the asked-for ginger, he added some to the mixture in the mortar, and went back to grinding. "Thanks. I hope this isn't too spicy for whoever else comes along," he added.

Charlie waved from her perch on a barstool, and nodded to Jenny with her mouth full. "Mmmmmmmmmm!"

Jenny nodded at Charlie and told her, "What you said. Totally. Unless it was an insult in which case bugger you right back." Jenny believed in covering her bases.

Charlie nearly snarfed curry up her nose, then spent a minute and a half trying not to die from exploding sinuses. "Agh. Hey, good to see you? Ahem. And no, I usually save the put-downs for the stuff I write." She grinned. "And no reason to right now, just being food-enthusiastic."

Jenny was suddenly wary of Charlie's diary. Or whatever. "So it's not horrible then? Good. Irish can cook, but I've never tried his curry before."

"It's delish," Charlie said happily, and took a quick swipe at her mouth with a napkin. "He's the Nomadic Celtic Chef. Slayer of all kinds of food-challenges, and creator of dishes never before discovered!"

"Such as," Jenny said with a grin, "something I could actually cook."

Charlie's eyes crinkled up as she grinned. "I can only make spaghetti, meat loaf, and chicken-cucumber soup. You're not much for cooking either?"

"I can make tea," Jenny told her. "And stupid-easy soup. That's about it."

"Stupid-easy? Like from a can?" Charlie asked, taking a moment for the 'hot hot hot' dance again before digging back in. "Or is this another recipe?"

"From scratch, but it's more a method," Jenny said. "A stupid easy method. Ronan taught me, actually."

"Cool! And thus proving how he's got magical cooking powers," Charlie pointed out with a grin. "But yay on the tea thing?"

"Well," Jenny said. "I'm English. Tea is necessary for continued life."

Charlie snickered. "So you'll never die if you're stuck on a desert island. Now if you knew how to make chocolate, you'd be able to survive *and* be happy."

"Alas," Jenny said. "Making chocolate requires skills. Maybe I'll get stuck on an island with cacao trees. Bushes. Whatever it grows on."

"I think it's trees. But maybe that's cocaine? And now I'm imagining a totally different kind of castaway experience."

"Hm," Jenny said thoughtfully. "All in all, I'd rather have chocolate, actually."
