Fifth Floor Common Room, Monday Evening

"Can you hand me the ginger?" Ronan asked, as he ground some spices with a mortar and pestle. "The fresh, I mean." The fragrant smells of cooking curry were already pervading the common room, and probably making their way through the rest of the dorms. When Isabel handed over the asked-for ginger, he added some to the mixture in the mortar, and went back to grinding. "Thanks. I hope this isn't too spicy for whoever else comes along," he added.

[OOC: Open, as common rooms are! Come have some curry. :D]

Hoshi wrinkled her nose. "Might be easier to stick with the martial arts lessons."

Turtle nodded a little. "Martial arts would be more practical. It's a lot easier to hide mad skills than it is to hide a taser. What's with the sudden concern for protection, anyway?"

"I got jumped by a vampire two weeks ago," said Hoshi, looking sheepish. "I know some basic martial arts, but I panicked and couldn't fight it off. Another girl had to rescue me. Now the whole thing just seems so humiliating."

"But there's lots of people around like that who can help in situations like that," Turtle said with a small, assuring smile. "I'm not much of a fighter myself, but even if there are vampires, I feel fine. And can't you just thwart that with garlic or something? We've got that at the store, too, and I know there won't be legality issues with selling you garlic."

"I was thinking along the lines of offensive firepower, but I guess garlic is an easy defense," said Hoshi. Besides, the aikido master always stressed using defensive techniques first.

"A good defense is, after all, the best offense," Turtle nodded sagely. "I mean, why bother with all that fighting if preventive measures can...well, prevent it?"

Hoshi couldn't help giggling. "You sound just like the aikido master! He kept saying something similar."

"Well, you know," Turtle shrugged modestly, deciding not to mention that she just said that because she knew she couldn't fight for beans.
