Andromeda campfire, Monday evening

Jaina hadn't really had the concept of summer that most people had. There hadn't ever been a break from school for her, and half the time she'd be on a different planet that wouldn't even have proper summer weather. But not having classes till later in the week certainly helped with the summer feel, so that was why Jaina was starting a campfire, and wondering if she should have gotten marshmallows or something first. Oops.


[Open! It's my day off, I am enjoying it, dammit.]

"Hi person I don't know at my campfire," Jaina said, and she had to admit she sort of immediately liked her for the greeting. "Are you just trying to meet new people or have your cabinmates scared you away already?"

"The new people thing. My cabinmates are pretty cool," Lois said. A couple of them were big drinkers. "I'm Lois."

"Jaina," she said. "Where are you normally?"

"Lupus," Lois said. "Which, hey, turns out to be the name of a constellation. Here I was thinking it was just a disease. I thought the school had something against me when I first found out what my cabin was called."

"Nice," Jaina said with a grin. "Last year I was in Chupacabra. Which was fine until I found out that it's a fancy name for goat-sucker, or something."

"Jeez, can't the school name cabins after friendly woodland animals or something?" Lois asked. "I'm just glad I'm not in this cabin. I'd have trouble spelling it."

"Luckily I don't think you'll have to," Jaina said. "And I don't think they can go with friendly woodland animals. It'd go against the nature of Fandom."

Unless they were animals John Crichton had been turned into, but Jaina didn't know that.

"I'm slowly beginning to learn that," Lois said. "I can't help but think my dad failed to read the brochure too throughly when he decided to send me here."

"Probably," she said. "That's the only explanation for why a lot of people are here, I'm sure. Or else they left some key information out of the brochure entirely."

"So how long have you been here?" Lois asked. "You look pretty at home. Which is a compliment after what I've seen the last few days."

"A year, Fandom time," said Jaina. "Yeah, I'm pretty used to it here now. Once you have your brain broken a few dozen times it's easier to fit in."

"I hope so. So far I've only gotten the tiny talking tortoise thingys," Lois said. She paused. "And my roommate's kind of weird."

"That's twice I've heard that today," she recalled. "Who's your roommate?

"Her name's Giselle. Red hair, giant poofy dress. You'll know her when you see her," Lois said. Giselle stood out. A lot. "She's a sweet girl but weird. Or maybe I'm the weird one. I don't know, I don't really have too much experience living with girls."

Jaina could relate. "Family of boys?" she guessed.

"Close. My dad's a General. I grew up with the guys in the military next door. So it's like having a really, really big family of armed men," Lois said.

Jaina had to smile. "My dad used to be one of those," she said. "I didn't have military guys next door, though. I just knew all the admirals."

"Oh the admirals are always good. You bat your eyes at them and look adorable and you can get whatever you want," Lois said. At least that had been her experience. "Always nice to meet a fellow army brat."

"Not exactly army," Jaina said. "And I've never done the eye-batting." Also, the admirals she knew were along the lines of Ackbar and Kre'fey and oh ew shutting down the brain now.

"Your dad got to boss people with guns around, you're an army brat. Unless he was in the mafia. Then you'd be a mafia princess," Lois looked Jaina over for a second. "Your dad isn't in the mafia, is he?"

Jaina paused. "He did some supply runs for something like that way back when, but I don't think that counts," she said thoughtfully.

"Totally doesn't," Lois said. Not that she wouldn't have had too much of a problem if her dad had been involved with the mafia. Wasn't her problem.
