Andromeda campfire, Monday evening

Jaina hadn't really had the concept of summer that most people had. There hadn't ever been a break from school for her, and half the time she'd be on a different planet that wouldn't even have proper summer weather. But not having classes till later in the week certainly helped with the summer feel, so that was why Jaina was starting a campfire, and wondering if she should have gotten marshmallows or something first. Oops.

Lois waved back. "Hiya! New kid or old kid?"

"Really old kid," Luke said. "I graduated a few weeks ago."

"Oh, another graduate. Congratulations," Lois said, giving him a thumbs up. "Now that I've been here a couple of days I realize that it's a miracle you've managed to do so without going crazy."

Luke laughed. "Maybe I'm just good at hiding my crazy," he said.

Lois grinned. "I'd be pretty impressed with your hiding skills if you are. You look pretty normal to me."

"That's me, totally normal," Luke lied. "I'm Luke, by the way."

"I'm Lois," she said. "And in case it wasn't obvious, I'm a new kid."

"Welcome," he said with a bright smile. "No one's scared you too badly, right?"

"Not yet," Lois said. "But I'm sure someone will get their chance soon."

"Some of the older students take joy in trying to traumatize the new kids," Luke said, sounding disapproving. "This place is strange enough without scaring you all."

"Well, my fake big brother is being very nice about the whole thing. I'm being eased into the weird," Lois said. "The tiny talking tortoises were a nice introduction."
