Right, showing Jaina how to cook. It couldn't be too hard, John reasoned. He was not a good cook by any stretch, but he was capable of boiling water and setting timers and following directions. The whole endeavor was more about showing her what cooking entailed in comparison to making a sandwich or microwaving popcorn rather than some sort of five course meal.

And he was prepared. He'd purchased ingredients, he'd gotten out pans. There would be spaghetti for dinner, and enough for everyone.

"Okay, so first, you know what a stove is, right?" John teased, rubbing his hands together. At least he hoped he was teasing.

"And I started the water," he replied, amused by her impatience. "Is it done or are you tired of waiting? Either way, I'll put the drainer thing in the sink for you." He grabbed the colander and moved to the sink.

"Both," she said, turning off the stove and grabbing the pot by the handle. "It looks fine."

"I trust you," John said. Even if he shouldn't. "Now toss it in here and we'll be ready to go."

Jaina dumped the pasta into the colander to drain. "See, it's fine." It might be not as soft as some people liked. It was al dente.

"Looks good enough to eat," John said, bringing over plates and tongs. "Serve it up!"

"Just making me do everything, aren't you?" she teased, reaching for the tongs.

"Hey this is your show," John said. "Besides, I like it when you work hard."

"Have you ever known me not to?" she asked lightly, dishing out some of the pasta onto the plates.

"Nope," he said. "But that doesn't make it any less hot."

Jaina grinned. "Did we go to a dirty place and I missed it?"

"Nope," he repeated. "I'm just answering your questions. And aren't we always in a dirty place?"

"Not always. Sometimes there's serious before the dirty stuff," she pointed out.

John laughed, spooning sauce onto the pasta. "Well, in my defense we had kinda serious already."

"What, destiny isn't your idea of small talk?"

"Yeah, not so much, no," John said, moving to bump her shoulder.

"Maybe you're just weird," she said, bumping him back before going to get forks.

"What, you'd enjoy constant small talk about destiny and the meaning of your life?" He was doubtful here.

"I was kidding, but to be fair, I do get that at home," she pointed out, handing him one of the utensils.

"I'm gonna count myself lucky there," John said, taking the fork and grabbing a plate of food. "Okay, now, if this cooking thing failed, there's both chocolate Tim Tams and a trip to find pizza on backup."

"I have no idea what the first thing is, but you said chocolate, so I'll trust you," she noted.

"They're tasty, Sokka recommended them," John told her. "Don't try the stuff packed in the cabinets though. Salty as all hell."

"Ew," she said. "Do I even want to know what it is?"

"No," he shook his head. "I don't even want to know."

"Try the food instead," she recommended.

"Right," John sat himself in a chair and twirled some spaghetti onto his fork and then into his mouth. "Mmm."
