Self-Defense Club, The Gym, Monday afternoon

The punching bags were back, and Hoshi was already taking a few punches at one as she waited for everyone else. "Welcome back. I hope you guys had a better weekend than I did," said Hoshi with a frown.

"The best way to stay safe is to avoid situations where you might run into trouble, like areas with poor lighting or trying to walk home after dark by yourselves. And, for goodness sake, when the island gets invaded, you're better off staying in your safe location than taking a chance on the streets," said Hoshi, making eye contact with everyone in turn.

"That said, if you do run into trouble, you should aim to disable your opponent by striking certain points on the body, which are listed on the handout that I'll pass around," she continued. "Keep in mind that this should only be for self-defense. You shouldn't go around hitting people. We don't have any dummies to practice on today, so we'll be using the punching bags instead."

If it's in the woods, Amber could very well imagine. "That pig!"

"I should have waited to hear if he broke up with his girlfriend before taking him to the preserve," said Hoshi. "Oh well. At least I get to keep the dog."

Amber cocked her head. "You took him for a walk in the woods? And he had a girlfriend?"

...

"I think I'm confused."

"Maybe I need to back up," said Hoshi. "So my visitor this weekend, Jonathon, told me that he had something important to tell me, so I suggested we talk while walking Porthos, who is his dog, originally."

She sighed. "I thought he was going to kiss me, and I was sitting there with my eyes closed and waiting for it. Instead, he announced that he got me into Starfleet officer training and that I'll have to leave Fandom at the end of the spring semester."

"Oh wow," she said, blinking all that into her brain. "Oh. Uh. Damn."

So there was no sex. Uh. Amber's mind had totally been in the gutter what the hell?

"...and this sucks for you?" Because Amber might not understand the whole other outter space living, but officer training was a good thing, right?

Nope, Amber wasn't the only one with her mind in the gutter. Hoshi had plans for what was supposed to happen afterwards in Jon's hotel room.

"I'd have to leave for good," said Hoshi. "No more Fandom. I'd finish my senior year in San Francisco."

"Oh, Hoshi. That just plain sucks," she stated.

"I don't know what I''m going to do," said Hoshi. "Jon seemed to take it for granted that I'll drop everything and go."

"And he wants you to go because? I mean, you like him right?"

"I'm crazy about him," said Hoshi, "but I think he just wants a communications officer who can translate in a pinch."

"Ah," Amber sighed. "Kind of stuck then aren't you? Unless... he did break up with his girlfriend?" asked hopefully.

"Good question. He didn't say anything and I never thought to ask," said Hoshi. "I would have thought that he'd take his dog back if they did break up, though. The only reason I got to keep Porthos was because the girlfriend was allergic to dogs."

"Well there's a good clue. Answer this then - do you want to go?"

"I've always wanted to join Starfleet," said Hoshi. "I just assumed that I'd be able to finish school with all of my friends and everything first."

"Can't you do that and then join Starfleet?"

"I suppose so," said Hoshi. "But then I'd miss out on being on Jon's crew. He's going to be captain of the first of a new class of ships."

"So you're thinking maybe you can win him over? Make him ditch his girl?"

Not like Amber really thought there was anything wrong with it.

"Maybe," said Hoshi. "But Jon's ship is going to be the first one. They'll be the first one coming across all these new languages. It's a great opportunity for me, and honestly, that's more important to me than him."

"Then it sounds like your decision is pretty much made," Amber said, watching her.

"I guess so," said Hoshi. "It's been my dream. I guess missing the last year of high school is a small price to pay."

"For your dream? I'd say so. If my dream were to smack me in the face like that, I wouldn't hesitate."

"And it's not like I have to leave tomorrow or anything," said Hoshi. "I'll still be here for spring break, the prom, and all that other fun stuff."

"Then you totally shouldn't worry about it now," Amber smiled. "You're definitely here for all the good stuff."

"Yeah," said Hoshi. "It feels weird, but I have time to get used to it."

"Well, in the meantime maybe you can contact your boi," she grinned, "and tell him how you feel. Lay it on the line, you know?"
