Basement pool [late afternoon]

Ben really wanted to be at the gym, but even he wasn't stubborn enough to punch a bag when his joints weren't fully healed.

Floating in the water was better for that, even if he looked a little ridiculous wearing a shirt and long pants. The scars the Embrace of Pain had left weren't for other people to stare at, he'd decided.

He closed his eyes and enjoyed the silence.

"Probably," Ben agreed, not at all uncomfortable with Ender being so close to him. "It's what I do."

Ender just smirked a little bit, and splashed at him. "Carrot head."

"Gundark brain," Ben replied, splashing back.

Ender grinned.

He was dripping wet, and his hair was plastered to his head, but he was still grinning.

Ben couldn't remember seeing Ender grin like that. It made him ridiculously happy.

"Doofus," he said, voice full of affection.

"Not nearly as bad as you," Ender retorted, finding the edge of the pool to hang on to. "Big bad."

"Little bad," Ben corrected. "My dad's the big bad." He smiled. "For a little longer, anyway. I'm almost taller than him."

"I'll let you have a few more inches," Ender promised.

"That's awfully kind of you," Ben said, leaning against the edge of the pool, too. "You'll look pretty silly calling me small fry when I'm two meters tall."

"You'll still be a small fry," he retorted, "It's a state of mind. Like being a string bean."

"It's not at all a state of mind," Ben declared, reaching out to swipe at Ender's head.
