Third Floor Common Room, Wednesday Afternoon

It had taken a few moments to figure out the DVD player, but Merlin did as he was told and just pushed buttons until it worked. It was a surprisingly good method.

He sat back, ready to watch this porno thing that Emmett had said would be interesting.

And in the first five minutes, he couldn't quite understand the draw of this sort of entertainment. It was only like Morgana and Gwen in the fact that they looked vaguely similar. The way they talked and the room they were in certainly didn't look like any castle he'd ever seen. And, really, those dresses were just terribly impractical for a lady or a servant. They must be terribly cold--

Merlin's eyes went very big as the dress issue was solved and they ladies started kissing. The only sound he made was the verbal equivalent of a keysmash.

"Had wha--" He was looking again! Merlin quickly lowered his eyes, putting a hand over them, just in case. "Nor did I."

"That is not what people watch!" she protested. Then, "Well, some people do. I guess. Or they wouldn't make it. But not normal people!"

"I know that now!" Merlin offered the remote, hoping she would do better with it than he. It was loud now. Very, very loud.

"I don't want it!" Francine flailed, somehow operating under the impression that if she touched the remote, it would.... infect her or something. She made a last-ditch grab for it when reason prevailed, but what with the windmilling hands, it went flying into the sofa cushions.

And so the remote hit the ground and Merlin was scrambling to make sure she hadn't brained herself. "Are you alright?"

It was a very legitimate concern, but shockingly, she hadn't. This time. Francine slapped a hand back over her face. "Did I break it?"

Merlin was leaning in toward her to make sure she hadn't broken her nose or anything. "I don't think you have."

The remote, Merlin. The remote.

Francine's hand slid down an inch or two as she peeked out to figure out why Merlin's voice was so much closer. "Um. Hi?"

"Hullo." Merlin blinked a few times before quickly rearing back and landing on his skinny arse. "Sorry, sorry!"

"Huh?" No, no, that was a baaad direction to go. "I mean what? Why?"

"I thought you were hurt!" Merlin said from his spot on the floor. Someday they wouldn't be so confused.

"Oh." Francine felt her face. just to check. "No. I meant the remote." She leaned over and peered down at him. "...Are you?"

"Oh. That." Merlin looked over to where it lay next to him. "Are those tube bits supposed to be out of it?"

"I broke tubes?" If she had to break tubes, couldn't it have been the TV? Francine slid to the floor and scrambled for the remote. "Oh, thank God, it's just the batteries."

Battery. There seemed to be only one. "Crap."

"Do the batteries do something?" Merlin asked, pulling himself up into a more comfortable position.

"They um." She waved the empty remote. "They make it go."

"Oh."

Well.

"Bugger."

"I found one!" Francine held it up hopefully while behind her the tv blasted out cheesy music and heavy breathing.

Merlin turned toward the TV for a moment and was frozen there. "Are they on a horse now?"

"Huh?" Nononono. Bad word. "What?" Don't look don't look don't look don't-- "That can't be safe!"

"Least of all for the horse," Merlin said. unable to look away. "It looks frightened."

"That can't be legal," Francine amended. "It's gotta be cruelty to animals or something."

Merlin cleared his throat. "Are the batteries working now?"

Off off off! If only magic worked that way.

"I can't find the other one!" Let's just ignore the part where she could walk over to the tv and shut it off at the source. Francine certainly was. She dropped down to her hands and knees to peer under the couch.

Crouching down as well, Merlin peered under the couch from the other side. He could see it, just out of reach there...

And there it was being pulled to his hand.

"Found it!"
