Wednesday After Classes, The Gym -- Cheerleading Practice

Savannah was a little more somber than usual as she got to the Gym and set up for practice. She pulled out the mats and made sure they were perfectly aligned. After doing that, she set up a table for the refreshments and then a table with the sign in sheet and the music.

The gym was alive with the sounds of techno as Savannah started stretching out.

Peyton blinked at him. "Okay."

"Soooooo, how's it going?"

"Not bad," Peyton said. "Missing the cruise, but hey, that's life, right? And I've got a lot to think about anyway."

"Seems to be a general theme. You wanna talk about anything?"

She bit her lip. "It's... kind of complicated."

"These kinds of things usually are."

"I think I need to go find my mom. Not my real Mom, my bio mom."

She swallowed hard and turned away a little stretching to avoid having to make eye contact.

Priestly noticed the swallowing and avoiding eye contact and decided to carefully not make a big deal of this, just keep it simple.

"Okay. Mind if I ask why?"

She shrugged as if none of it mattered. "I don't know. 'Cause she's my mom in a way. And somebody said that maybe everybody always leaves me because I make them go. And she's dying. So if I wait to long to decide what to do I won't have a choice."

"So you know who she is, at least."

Peyton gave a short laugh. "Yeah. Showed up on my door beginning of the summer. Announced she was my mother. I didn't even know I was adopted till then."

". . . Did she prove it?"

She ducked her head again. "My dad confirmed it."

"So you wanna get to know her. That's cool."

"I don't know," Peyton admitted. "It feels like I'm betraying my real mom if I do. All these things I always thought were from her, like my drawing and my love of music, turns out it's from Ellie. And I don't want it to be."

She looked at him ruefully. "I know. I sound like a spoiled little brat."

"Uh. That kind of depends on the whole 'nature vs. nurture' thing. You mighta gotten those from your real mom."

She looked up at him hopefully. "You think, maybe?"

"Well, yeah. I mean, no one's really been able to answer that. But if your real mom taught you about that stuff and encouraged it, then I don't see why it's not from her."

Peyton looked off into the distance, pondering. "Yeah, maybe."

After a moment she turned and gave him a small smile. "Thanks. That helps."

"Hey, no problem. Glad I could help."

"Anyway, I tracked her down on-line, found her address," Peyton said quietly. "Now I just have to decide."

"Maybe you should, like, contact her, first."

"I don't know," Peyton hedged. "I was pretty brutal about telling her to get the hell out of my life and never come back. Besides, she just showed up at my house out of the blue."

"Yeah, and it sounds like that pretty much sucked for you. So . . . maybe it's better not to do the same back to her."

"Might be harder for her to turn me down if I'm actually there in person, though," she pointed out, then shook her head. "I'm making myself crazy about this and I haven't even decided I'm actually going to do it."
