The Deck, early evening Thursday

Dinah had hamburgers and hot dogs, some veggie platters and chips and dip, soft drinks and cake. Oh, and ice cream in the fridge inside for later.

Happy birthday, Will Shakespeare! Oh, and her too.

[very limited OCD ~~about to go~~ up!, for early justice and time zones; set before Dress Rehearsal/Previews.

She lifted an eyebrow and let the corner of her lip curl up into a sort-of smile, her gaze sweeping across the crowd before returning to him. And how was he enjoying himself so far?

She got a tilted head and an amused smile in reply. Hopefully that answered her question, and if not words might have to be used.

She shook her head, clearly amused herself, and nodded sligqhtly to indicate a mostly empty area. She started making her way through the crowd toward it, and he was welcome to join her if he wanted.

And if not, well, that was fine too.

The silent way of communicating amused and intrigued him, and he walked slowly through the crowd to join her.

"I didn't expect you to be someone who enjoyed parties," Leto said as they met.

[I might disappear soon due to need for sleep]

"I don't, really," Triela admitted with a small smirk of a grin. "But I told Dinah I'd come, and I had to deliver her present." She shifted slightly to draw attention to the brown paper bag wrapped around a box which was tucked under her arm.

[No worries! Sleep is gooooood!]

"A present?" Leto asked.

[and one more before sleep! ;)]

"It is traditional to give gifts at birthdays." Triela was very sure of this because she had been told it was so.

"Ah. I didn't know." He hoped Dinah would not take offence. He could always correct this error later, he hoped. "And what gift have you chosen?"

"A pair of boots," Triela answered, shifting the package under her arm as if to illustrate. "A pair that both looks good and allows freedom of movement."

It was the sort of thing Triela would have wanted herself.

"A pair to replace the ones that got eaten?" There was a tiny smirk. "It is a good gift."

Triela smiled. "I have good taste," she agreed.

"Knowing your talents and weaknesses is always an advantage." He grinned.

"And it's better to make sure that the one outnumbers the other," she agreed with a grin. She flashed a grin, "If you want help picking something out, well, I do have good taste."

"Thank you for your generous offer, but I think I can manage." He reached out to push Triela's hair away from her face. "Is your good taste limited to choice of presents?"

Triela didn't flinch, but she did stiffen as he touched her hair, and her eyes dropped slightly. She took a deep breath and squared her shoulders before looking directly at him.

"I'll have you know that I have excellent taste in general."

He noticed the reaction and took a step back. "That is good to know," he replied. "Tell me, what things are mostly to your own taste?"

She relaxed almost imperceptibly as he stepped back. "Good tailoring," she smiled.

Of course letting him step back made her feel like she was showing weakness, so she stepped forward just a bit trying to hide it. "What about yourself?"

This was an interesting game. Leto casually moved a little closer again, wanting to test Triela's reaction. "Tailoring? Does that include haberdashery?" He paused, meeting her eyes without blinking. "I belong in the desert. Taste has nothing to do with it. But I do enjoy distractions from destiny, at least for the time being."

She stiffened slightly again, but she was much better at keeping it under control this time and she didn't step back. "I've never been one for hats," she shrugged.

"Destiny?" she asked, a hint of derision in her voice. She wasn't a big believer in destiny.

Leto didn't step back either. "A pity. I'm sure they would suit you." Leto smiled, picking up the tone in her voice. "There are things I will have to do in the future that might go against whatever my personal tastes are. Here and now, things are different. I find that enjoyable." And frustrating, but there was no need to mention that.

"Oh," Triela nodded in seeming understanding. "That's not destiny, that's just life." She wasn't all that big a fan either.

This close she couldn't help notice his eyes. Not that she hadn't noticed before, but the proximity provided a new sort of curiosity. "You're eyes are exceptionally blue," she pointed out. Her own were blue as well, but a more common sort of it.

That made him laugh. Most people noticed that a lot sooner. "Eyes of Ibad, the sign of spice addiction," he said. "I'm Fremen. Spice is in everything around us and we cannot avoid it."

Eye color wasn't generally all that important in Triela's line of work, except perhaps as a way of identifying people.

"Drugs?" Triela asked, curiosity piqued. She wasn't being critical. Perhaps they were more similar than she might have guessed.

"Yes," Leto replied. "Does that surprise you?"

[bedtime!]

She considered her answer for a moment before nodding slightly. "Most people around here find the idea of drug addictions distasteful. You seem comfortable with it."
