FDR Campfire, Wednesday evening

Shilo had decided to celebrate a successful first day at work with a fire. So she'd found some kindling, an old newspaper, and matches, and was building a fire the same way that her father had taught her how to in the fireplace.

She didn't know if it worked the same way for a campfire, but she could only hope. Besides, it wasn't as if she was planning on this being someone's funeral pyre. Just a small campfire, and hopefully some company.

She suddenly wondered if she should have stopped for s'mores supplies.

"True. I'm Shilo," she replied. "From the looks of things we're either going to have plenty of marshmallows or can expect a ton of people to join us."

"I guess so. But this is fun. I've never gotten to sit around a campfire before. We don't do a lot of camping in New York City," said Harper.

"You're from New York City too?" Shilo asked, sounding excited as she took the longest sticks she could get from the leftover kindling.

"Yeah! My friend Alex and I both went to Tribeca Prep, and then Alex transferred to Fandom High last year," said Harper. "It just wasn't any fun without her, though, so I transferred myself in January."

"You're lucky!" Shilo replied. "I'd love to have had a friend already here. Not that everyone hasn't been super-nice to me."

"It was actually easier to make friends here in Fandom than at my old school," said Harper. "But Tribeca Prep had this big clique of mean girls who all followed this one girl named Gigi. She was awful! Without someone like her around, it's a lot nicer."

Shilo thought of Amber briefly, and shuddered to herself. "Well, it seems like Fandom doesn't have any cliques," she said. "Or at least none I've seen."

"I haven't seen a lot of them either. Everyone here seems to be happy to be themselves, and there's no one person that everyone wants to imitate," said Harper.

"I think it might be because everyone feels comfortable enough to be themselves here," Shilo proposed. "No one's considered more normal than anyone else."

"Especially with all the wizards and frogs and all that," said Harper, nodding.

"Exactly," Shilo agreed. "Everyone else out there-" this was punctuated by a wide sweep of Shilo's arm, which apparently symbolized the rest of the world- "are the ones missing out."

"So, are you one of those kids who has powers and stuff?" asked Harper.

"Not unless you count fainting as a power," Shilo joked. "The only thing that makes people go 'whoa' about me is the fact that I'm from 2056."

"Oooh, that sounds awesome!" said Harper. "I'm from the same year as this one, so it sounds so cool to talk to people from the past and the future. Nothing like this ever happens at home. Well, almost nothing," she added, thinking.

Shilo wondered if she should tell Harper of what the future held. And then decided against it. After all, what if she changed the future by being here? Could she prevent everything that had caused everyone so much pain and trouble? Reverse the events..?

Ow. That line of thinking made her head hurt. She opted to focus on toasting her marshmallow to perfection. "So how do you like your marshmallow?" she asked, handing Harper a stick.

"Really, really melty," said Harper, putting two marshmallows onto her stick and holding them out towards the fire. "They're better when they're all warm and runny, I think."

"I haven't tried them that way yet." Shilo stuck hers into the flame as well. "I guess I'll just toast mine as long as you do and see if I like it."

"Something about getting the marshmallows really, really hot just seems to make them sweeter," said Harper, trying to hold her marshmallows even closer to the flames.

And promptly set her marshmallows on fire.

"Oh NO! They're ruined!" Shilo cried, horrified, and quickly pulled her marshmallow- which was not on fire- from the heat.

Harper pulled her marshmallows out of the fire and blew on them until the flame was extinguished. "No, it's alright. They're just a little toasty on the outside. They should be warm and runny on the inside," she said, carefully pulling one of the marshmallows apart.

Shilo began to look happier. "Oh, okay then," she replied. "I didn't think you'd want the outside burnt like that."

Harper hadn't planned on burning her marshmallows so badly, but she went with it. "It's the only way to get the outside all toasty," she explained.

Shilo nodded. "I think I'll stick with a light brown and just melting for mine," she said, returning hers to the flames in a tentative fashion.
