The Second Floor Common Room, Thursday Evening

Karla was nervous. Well, that wasn't much of a surprise. Karla had been nervous all day. But this was a new and different kind of nervous. Now, she was about to host a party, which she had never done, in a world that was still foreign to her, and for many girls she did not know very well. It was enough to unsettle even the strongest nerves.

Still, she though she was ready. Dinah had promised to provide her laptop for movies. Karla and Gabrielle had gone to Turtle's and purchased lots of ~~moddable~~ snacks, sodas, and lots of candy and chocolates. She'd bought make-up, since Dinah had mentioned it's importance in such matters, plenty of blankets and pillows to share, and several other sundries because she wasn't entirely certain what else would be needed, and wished to be prepared. Also, lots of booze, from her private Kaeleeran stash.

Most importantly, there was a small, neatly lettered sign on the door that said 'No Males Please.'

Well, she was as ready as she was ever going to be. "Kiss kiss," she muttered.

"Of course!" Karla smiled back. "Otherwise, you'll be going back on your your promise to help, and we can't have that, can we?"

"No. Definitely not." Triela was serious about that.

"Then it looks like you're stuck here all night, then," Karla said. Then, in a slightly lower, completely serious tone, "I really do appreciate your being here, Triela. Thank you." She went to give Triela's uninjured hand a grateful squeeze.

Triela squeezed back gently. "I'm here if you need me," she returned quietly. "Don't hesitate to give me a call." It was nice to have someone to be sort of big-sisterly to. Triela suspected that, like the girls back at the Agency, Karla could take care of herself, but that didn't change the way she felt.

Karla debated telling Triela the true motivations behind the party, but in the end decided against it. Not right now. Triela looked liked she'd already had a tough few days, and Karla wasn't going to add to that. And it's not like this was a unique experience. There would be plenty of opportunities going forward.

"Well, since I can't have you fainting away from hunger, let's grab something to eat, shall we? I've got lots of snacks, and pizza should be here, soon."

"I think I could be persuaded to eat some," Triela grinned. "As long as it's not too sweet." Triela had the opposite of a sweet-tooth.

"Not a fan of sweet, huh?" Karla asked. "Remind me to have you try a pickleberry some time." Her smile was much too innocent.

Triela snorted. That smile was far too innocent. "Maybe we can share one."

"Well, they're too small to share, but I'd happily munch on a few with you."

It was the first one that punched you in the throat.

"You just let me know when, then," Triela grinned. Sounded like a challenge, after all.

"It'll have to wait till I get back from my first trip home. But Ino said I could plant a honey-pear tree and a few pickleberry bushes in the garden. And, of course, I'll bring back some for eating, too. You'll love them!" Karla said brightly. It was the kind of brightly used to say things like 'What's the worst that could happen?'

"It's possible," Triela smiled tolerantly. "There aren't that many things I love, though."

"Only because you've never been to Kaeleer," Karla pointed out. The arrogance there was mostly feigned. But Kaeleer did have unicorns, after all.

"I don't know if that's the only reason," Triela rolled her eyes, definitely amused.

"But it's probably a major factor," Karla assured her, handing over a plate with cheese, crackers, veggies, and hummus on it.

Triela laughed as she took the plate and snagged a few crackers and some cheese. "Maybe some day we'll find out."

"I hope so," Karla said. "For real, and not just through a memory web."

"Well, if you ever want someone to keep you company on a trip home..."

"If I ever go home, your company would be much appreciated," Karla told her earnestly.

Especially is 'home' meant 'Glacia' and not just 'Kaeleer.' If she were heading back to Glacia, she'd want all the assistance she could get. And that went double for assistance that was good in a fight.

"And maybe you'll get a chance to visit Rome." Not during a mission, of course...

"Even if it isn't all that exciting." Of course, for Triela, 'exciting' had a pretty special definition.

"Rome is your home?" she asked. "Is that also in America?"

No one had really discussed geography with Karla yet.

"It's as close to home as I have. The Agency is there," she added as if that helped explain things.

"And, no, not in America. It's in Italy which is across the ocean from here."

"Oh, the ocean," Karla said with shining eyes. "I'd love to."

Someone had a crush. It just happened to be on an aspect of the natural world.

Triela laughed. "Do you spend much time out on the beach, then?"

"Not yet. I've mostly been settling in. But I intend to, soon, yes. So far, though, I've only been out a few times. Do you like the beach?"
