Third Floor Common Room - Monday Morning

Claire was in a great mood this morning. She felt like a huge weight was lifted from her shoulders thanks to her conversation with Dinah last night. Plus there was the whole normal hormones thing.

And maybe thinking about Jon a little.

She was awake far earlier than she needed to be, so she headed down to the common room and found what she needed to bake some cookies. She put the radio on and might even be singing along a little.

Karla shrugged. "Sex is a fact of life," she said casually. "It makes little sense to hide that. We have rules governing marriage and fidelity, of course, but trying to deny that sex exists and people enjoy it seems pointless."

Claire nodded. "People where I'm from like to pretend that no one has sex unless it's in a marriage and for the purpose of making babies."

Karla frowned. "Why would they do that? It doesn't make any sense at all. This past week proves how foolish that notion is."

"I don't know," Claire said with a shrug. "It's just the way my society views sex."

"Your society is very odd," Karla informed Claire, indulging in a bit of pot-calling-kettle. "Males ruling, people pretending sex doesn't exist, witches being expected to turn people to toads, people dying at eighty and not coming back as demon-dead." She shook her head. "This all takes a lot of getting used to."

Claire smiled. "Yeah, well, your world sounds pretty confusing too."

"Of course it does!" Karla protested. "When your world is insane, sanity appears as an anomaly." She gave Claire a quick grin to show she was--mostly--teasing.

Claire giggled, figuring as much. "I was disappointed that I didn't get to stop by your booth at the fair."

"And I yours. Your meal smelled delightful." Karla smiled at Claire. "I think you would have enjoyed riding unicorns."

"It does sound like fun," she said. "And I can definitely make ribs again sometime."

"...From which animal do these ribs come from?" she asked delicately.

She'd never forgotten Jaenelle and the nightmares about the leg served at Briarwood.

"Pigs," Claire told her. "... are you a vegetarian?"

"Darkness, no!" Karla said, nearly recoiling from the idea. "I just like checking to be sure. You never know what some cultures will eat."

"Okay, that's good," Claire said. "I'd say that around here, pigs, cows and chickens are going to be the most likely animals that get eaten. Oh, and turkeys and geese, though generally those tend to be for holidays and special occasions in my experience. Some people eat lamb, but I've never really cared for it."

Karla nodded approvingly. "I eat those meats. And fish as well. Though I have learned that it is the vegetables that I need to fear. Dinah fed me peppers. Wench." Not that Karla hadn't fully deserved it, in retaliation for the pickleberries.

"Oh, right, I forgot about fish," Claire said. "Seafood isn't big in Texas."

She giggled though. "Not all peppers are hot. It depends on what kind of pepper they are. And most vegetables aren't spicy."

"Humph. I think I'm still going to demand a warning next time I eat anything. I was also fed spicy ice cream the other day." To be fair though, Ronan had warned her. She had just been to busy admiring his hotness to pay much attention.

"Spicy... ice cream?" That was a first for Claire.

"Ronan puts cayenne on his ice cream," Karla explained, grumpyfacing. "He said that the ice cream would dampen most of the heat, but since these things are so new to me..." She shrugged. "Glacia isn't filled with plants that try to light you on fire."

Claire's nose wrinkled. "Ew. That sounds gross."

"I couldn't tell you. I was too busy choking to really notice a flavor. Assuming pain has a flavor. But my ice cream was perfectly good."

"Ice cream should be sweet," Claire said firmly.

"Precisely. The idea of ice cream being painful goes against everything I believe in. I think part of the reaction was every fiber of my being revolting against the idea." Karla laughed.

"I'm definitely right there with you," Claire assured her. "Ice cream is supposed to be a good thing. Not pain inducing."

"Like cookies!" Karla said, holding up her...whateverth. "These are very good, you know."
