Third Floor Common Room - LUAU

Joan and Kate had worked all afternoon to transform the common room into a tropical paradise.

Inside the door, a small table held flower leis for all of the party-goers. There were garlands hanging around the room, tabletop torches on most of the flat surfaces, and paper lanterns adding festive mood lighting.

Hawaiian music played in the background if anyone felt the urge to hula.

"What is it with people and asking this type of questions tonight?" Kate wondered aloud, wrinkling her nose. "It's a luau. Leis are a luau thing."

"Then I suppose I must get a lei," he agreed, not quite sure what it might be.

"...You have no idea what a lei is, do you?"

This was a problem she had encountered more than once this evening.

"Absolutely none," he agreed brightly, as he was reasonably sure there was very little reason why he'd know what a lei is. Just like he wouldn't know what 'voodoo' is, thank you Gregory Maguire.

Kate grinned. "It's these flower things that go around your neck," she said, gesturing at the two around hers. "You can have one of mine, if you want."

"I wouldn't want to take flowers from a girl," he told her with a shake of his head, "but if there's someplace I could get one of my own without troubling you, I'll go right away."

She thought he had weird ideas about troubling people, but didn't say it aloud.

"There's a table full of them over there by the door," she said with a smile.

He did. It came from a very interesting upbringing.

"Any suggestions on color? Other than the obvious."

"I think the purple ones could look nice," Kate suggested with a light shrug.

"I'll go with purple then," he agreed, heading over to the table. The color of the blooms made him think of his conversation yesterday with Raven, but he dismissed the thoughts and had him slipping the lei over his head as he lifted his chin.

"I almost feel as if I don't know what to say, as we've seen so much of each other of late and I'm terribly boring."

"You are not boring," she said, rolling her eyes. "You're from a place that's a whole lot different from where I'm from. When it comes to me, you're more exotic than Hawaii. Added to that, I think you're interesting in general. So no, you don't get to be boring."

"Oz more exotic then Hawaii. I'll be sure to tell Trism that in my next letter, though I think that he'd like much better to be warm than exotic," he joked as he looked around.

"I'm not sure what to try first. What would you recommend?"

"I'd recommend the pudding, or doing the hula."

She studied him with a smirk. "Which probably translates to just the pudding. Somehow you don't seem the hula type, but the pudding's really, really good."
