Third Floor Common Room - LUAU

Joan and Kate had worked all afternoon to transform the common room into a tropical paradise.

Inside the door, a small table held flower leis for all of the party-goers. There were garlands hanging around the room, tabletop torches on most of the flat surfaces, and paper lanterns adding festive mood lighting.

Hawaiian music played in the background if anyone felt the urge to hula.

"I know," Dinah said grudgingly. "I do. And I get why." She sighed. "I just-- I expected him to be more macho about it, instead of withdrawing, you know? I thought he'd be all out trying to prove it didn't matter."

Francine shrugged. "Everybody's got their sore spots." Or their breaking points, but this hadn't been that. Quite. If it had lasted more than a day, though...

"I guess." Dinah shook her head. "How's Merlin handling it? Better? Well, calmer, anyway. And how've things been here while we were gone?"

"I don't think he freaked out as much, yeah," Francine agreed. But maybe it was just calmer, not necessarily better. "And I let your teachers know you were out of town and weren't just ditching class on them."

"I so owe you cookies back," Dinah said gratefully. "Thank you! And I got you a moose. And some syrup. And an autographed picture from Lee Nicholas."

"An autographed picture, really? Eee---" Wait for it.

".....You got me a moose?"

"Yeah, he's wearing a Canada sweater, and he's really cute, and-- okay, wait." Dinah paused. Realized where they were. "Not a real moose!"

"Oh thank God! I have no idea what to feed them, and I don't think Katchoo would let me keep one in our room."

...she probably would. Never tell Francine that. "Mister Bond says come talk to him and Lady Ghanima... is way too good at figuring stuff out, sorry."

"It could hang out with the one in the office? But maybe they needed a special dispensation," Dinah said, grinning. "But you can cuddle the stuffed one I got, or put it in your hammock, and it can keep the others company.

"And oh, crap." She bit her lip, looking intimidated. "I knew I should e-mail, but then I wasn't sure when we'd be back, and I ... shoot. Well. Maybe he'll accept a make-up paper? You think?" Sighing, Dinah admitted, "Professor Ghanima is going to be harder, though."

"Mostly because you left her a voicemail with the Canada and demons part in it already," Francine pointed out.

"I was panicking! I'd just cried all over her the week before and it was embarrassing and I knew the guys wouldn't think of telling anyone we weren't dead and, and..." Dinah sighed. "Yeah. Not smart. Or not smart enough. Still not sure what else I should've done though. Except tell you not to talk to her? I guess?"

Francine shrugged. "She mostly sounded like she's going to roll her eyes at you for not taking grownups with you. I'm pretty sure you and Merlin won't get in trouble."

"That's good. Whew. I need to ask her for more help, anyway." She held up the wrist with Karla's gift on it. "Karla gave me a bracelet that shuts out everybody's thoughts if I touch them by accident. But I really need more practice." She dropped her wrist. "I already know too much stuff about other people already." Not even including the stuff she didn't 'overhear' in there.

Despite the constant feeling that everybody in the world knew more than her, after Arrakis Francine absolutely understood why Dinah didn't want to know the things she knew, the way she learned them. "Does the bracelet work?"

"It does!" Dinah did a little happy dance about that, and reached out to grab Francine's hand. "Think something, anything!"

Francine grinned. Hot Professor Bond is still hot. Tell no one.

"I have no idea what you just thought!" Dinah said, gleeful. "None! I wasn't even trying!"

"It was about cake!" Francine said utterly truthfully. Just, you know. Of the beef variety.

"We should have more of that! To celebrate!"

Of all kinds, if Dinah had any idea.
