Fifth Floor Common Room [evening]

Sookie was sort of surprised by the very sticky rain, and that in and of itself was a mark of how long she'd been there.

And after a day spent indoors reading, she decided to do something smart about the rain. And so she wandered out to her common room, found it empty, and took to carefully positioning some buckets to hang out the windows.

Sookie, meanwhile, set to work mixing up some pancake batter. And, of course, frying up some bacon and eggs. It wasn't really breakfast-for-supper unless you had all the components.

"Are you trying out again?" Ino asked, tilting her head. "I always vote for you."

It was true, so it didn't hurt to say it.

"Really?" Turtle asked, brightly, even if she also thought it was a shame Ino wasn't in her class to vote for her there, too. "Thank you so much, Ino! I'm glad you enjoy my broadcasts!"

She grinned.

"And yet," she teased, "you didn't answer my question. Yes, really."

"I'm sorry!" Turtle laughed. "I didn't mean to not answer; I just got excited! Yes, I'm trying out again, with Val, but it's nice to have a night off."

"I see," she laughed. "The key to your good graces is in compliments. But, yeah--definitely a good night to have it off! I think it was coming down pretty heavy just a bit ago."

"Most people are won over by compliments," Turtle pointed out. "It also helps that you're hitting me in my soft spot! It also seems like a genuine compliment, since I actually have won spots, so someone's got to be voting, right?"

She shook her head, giggling.

"Seriously, I'm crap at false compliments." Missions not withstanding naturally. "I'm too fond of telling people exactly what I think to waste time with that sort of thing. I swear, I'm totally telling the truth 'bout voting for you."

Which could only cause Turtle to sigh dramatically and shake her head. "Oh, Ino. Why couldn't you be a senior? Then I could sleep at least a little better tonight..."

"StuCo?" she asked, with a laugh. "Sorry, but honest I don't want to be a senior. That'd mean I'd have to leave soon and I'm pretending that's not going to happen."

She totally had two more years of denial.

"I'm actually a little excited about it," Turtle admitted. "I'll miss this place like crazy, but there's just so much to look forward to. Harvard, grad school, becoming a real lawyer..."

"Following your plan precisely, yeah?" Ino shrugged a bit. "I mean, that's totally cool too. It just, I don't like it when people leave, you know? And then, I'll be the one leaving, and that's a bit depressing."

Turtle gave Ino a sympathetic smile. "I can understand about people leaving," she said, "but there's just so much more out there, you know? Maybe not maple syrup rain, but more people, new experiences....I'm actually really excited for it, but it will be my fourth year, too. I'd still be clinging if it was only my second or third."

"Totally clinging," she admitted sheepishly. "I can see your points too--it'd be fun to leave, in a way, 'cause there's more than just classes and stuff here."

She shrugged again though.

"Just wish more people knew how to write letters, geez."

Turtle grinned a little at that, a bit ruefully. "Yeah, some people do tend to seem to drop off the face of the earth after they leave, but not everyone! I mean, Jeff and Jamie both keep in contact, since they've got their Turtle & Canary ventures back in their own homes. And, heck, Chad's got that show that broadcasts on the TV. I'm still not sure how he pulled that one off."

"'Cause he's awesome," Ino said loyally. He was a sib in a way. "And 'cause, you have to admit, he does tall, dark, and brooding rather amazingly well."

Turtle did look like she really could not argue that fact. "But my point is that some people still seem to make it work."

"He hasn't contacted people here," she pointed out. "So he's not really working that angle, though I guess that's 'cause of the show."

"But he's managed to call Teddy," Turtle returned. "He did in the last episode, I think. So there's that. It would be way too sad if he couldn't, those two have been together forever, and it's nice to know that some couples,"--said ruefully--"can make it."

Ino made a face. She was three for three with losing her boyfriends to the horrors of leaving.

"It is nice," she said, wrinkling her nose. "Can it happen to me eventually?y"

"Maybe!" Turtle said optimistically. "I mean, you've still got time."

"Ugh." She shook her head and laughed. "You sound so old."

"I'm going to be eighteen next year!" Turtle informed her, laughing as well. "That is old!"

"I'm almost sixteen," she said sulkily, though a smile lurked in her eyes. "And you don't see me being all old-like."

"Yes, well," Turtle said, lifting her chin, "some of us just mature quicker than others, I suppose."

"There's all sorts of types of maturity," Ino informed her loftily.
