The Roof: Saturday Evening

Happy-shiny-upbeat music was rolling off the roof this morning and down through the dorms. Layla had taken the time to string up some old Christmas lights that she had handwavily found at Things Reborn.

Food and drink Moddable of course was spread out on a table.

And of course the entire roof was already decorated in flowers, glitter and streamers.

Layla was already out in the middle of the roof bouncing around to the music and having a grand old time of it.

Clearly the island felt there was need for a party. Layla was just rolling around with it.

Priestly shook his head. "Cooking is fun. And if you're using that hour properly, the end result is totally worth it."

"You can cook for me anytime," Rose teased. "But I can't even boil water."

"That," Priestly said, "is, like, the dumbest thing ever. Not knowing how to boil water means you can't even make ramen."

Rose rolled her eyes. "So I'll just eat bread. And meat. Totally not going to insult you by calling it a sandwich."

This was what happened when a girl went to boarding school from the age of 4.

"That is a sad, sad existence."

"It's a fine existence, thanks," Rose said, making a face.

"You say that now, but that's because you don't know what you're missing."

"If you're so concerned, are you offering to teach me?" Rose asked, raising her eyebrows.

"I could show you some basics. But you might be better off trying stuff out for yourself."

"Never going to happen," Rose said, shrugging. "At least not as long as there's a caf and common rooms."

"Well, there you're at least getting someone putting some effort into it."

Rose shook her head, looking amused. "Okay, curious, why does it matter?"

"Why does quality ever matter?"

"Cause I look a lot better in BCBG than Target," she said instantly.

Somehow she thought this guy and Dimitri would get along.

"Yeah, because the people at BBGG or whatever put more time and effort into making their shirts than Target does. Same thing's true about food."

"You're really obsessed with that," Rose laughed. "If you were talking about fighting or something, I'd totally be agreeing with you."

"Okay, fine, leave taste out of it." That almost hurt to say. "One of the things you do when you spend time on preparing your food is make sure you're getting better nutrition. Which makes you fight better."

She opened her mouth then shut it again.

"Well, fine, when you put it that way."

"So we're agreed. Food is awesome."
