Karla looked around and nodded in satisfaction. There was a big glittery banner that said "CONGRATULATIONS TAHIRI!" hung over one wall. She wasn't going to admit it, but playing the glue and glitter and paint had been a lot of fun. Though, with the residual glitter in her hair (and the occasional glittery hand print on the banner), someone might be able to tell.

There was one table completely devoted to ice cream (and wrapped in cold spells). The centerpiece was, of course, a giant ice cream cake with a frosted lightsaber on it. Karla couldn't make any guesses about how accurate it was, but there was a greyish hilt and a ~~I was tempted to say red~~ blue beam coming from the front. It was enough to get the point across, dammit. She'd had to explain to the Chilly Boulder guy what she meant by lightsaber anyway. Though he immediately knew who Ben and Tahiri were. The table wasn't entirely covered by ice cream, as Dinah had mentioned bringing some, too.

It's possible that there may be an ice cream shortage at Chilly Boulder tonight. Sorry.

In the kitchen, there was even more food; this time covered in warming spells. Mostly there were pizzas with a variety of toppings, but she'd also gotten some sides from most of the other restaurants in town. Someone wanted to have pizza with a side of lobster bisque and quesadillas? Totally not a problem. There were also a variety of drinks and, stashed away in the fridge, a few steaks and a chicken--raw, of course--for Blind Seer.

As far as she could tell, everything was done. And if not...well, they could cope. Now the only thing to do was wait for the guests to arrive.

...and try not to cut into the cake before they arrived. It did look good.

Tahiri, though, did approach Raven with a shy, apologetic smile. "I'm glad you made it," was all she said, figuring Raven would know what she meant.

"Congratulations," Raven said, nodding in acknowledgment of Tahiri's meaning. "You are a Jedi Knight now?"

"For a few weeks." Tahiri carefully extended a wave of apology and reassurance toward her, not pushing it, just leaving it there for her to accept if she chose. "It's really not that big a deal, but Karla insisted on this and I couldn't say no, could I?"

It was totally a big deal; she was just self-conscious about it.

"You should be proud of your accomplishment," Raven said. Mmm, pride. "It is a great honor, is it not?"

She felt Tahiri's apology and accepted it, sending some reassurance of her own back to the other girl.

Crunchy chocolate-coated pride with a nougat center -- wait.

That firmed up the smile about the corner of Tahiri's mouth some more, and she drew herself up a little straighter ~~to a whole whopping 4'11 1/4!~~. "It's a huge responsibility." One she didn't think she was ready for, thanks to her little friend. "But yes, it's an honor."

"You will not have to leave the school to tend to other duties now, will you?" Raven asked.

A quick flash of doubt showed in Tahiri's expression. "Not that I've been told. At least, not more than I have been, as far as I know."

"I did not mean to worry you," Raven said quickly. "Surely you would have heard by now if you had to leave."

"Depends on how the war goes." Right, don't think about that -- if her theory held up, the state of the war had something to do with why Riina had gotten so much contentious. "Though Jaina's still here, so . . ."

She offered another small smile to Raven. "Complicated situation at home."

"I am sorry to hear that," Raven said. "If my abilities extended to other worlds, you know I would offer my help, but...."

"I know. You'd hate it anyway," Tahiri replied. ~~Because canon lives up to its name, man. Lives. Up. To. Itwhatthehell.~~ "It's that fun kind of complicated."

"Complication is rarely enjoyable," Raven said. "There may be some who thrive on it, but I do not think I am one of them."

"Keep it that way," Tahiri advised wryly. "I've forgotten what simple was like."

"I think I have as well, since I arrived here," Raven said. "But I do not regret it."

"Not any of it?" Tahiri asked, watching her carefully and knowing she herself hadn't helped much in that regard.

"The Other Fandom," Raven said quietly. "I would rather have not experienced that."

"Yeah." Tahiri offered her a tendril of comfort. "What I know about it was bad enough."

"I have tried to learn from it and put it behind me," Raven said. "I would rather focus on the good things...learning to feel, making friends for the first time."

Tahiri looked at her thoughtfully for several moments and finally offered, "I hope I count as one of them. At least, I'd like to think so."

"Of course you are," Raven said, looking at Tahiri with surprise. "I hope I have not given you any reason to think otherwise."

"More the other way around," Tahiri said, biting her lip.

"That was not truly your fault," Raven pointed out.

"I know. But sometimes it's hard," she said, with the ironic smile of someone who was getting way too familiar with this situation, "to remember which person wearing that face did what."

Raven struggled to hold her tongue about that just proving she had to do something about the situation, and that she was being stubborn and foolish to refuse assistance. Difficult as it was not to go there, this was a party, after all. "I knew it was not you," she said simply.

Which was enough to take a lot of the worry out of Tahiri's eyes. "Okay," she said, exhaling slowly. "Okay. That's good. I really am glad you made it tonight."
