Karla looked around and nodded in satisfaction. There was a big glittery banner that said "CONGRATULATIONS TAHIRI!" hung over one wall. She wasn't going to admit it, but playing the glue and glitter and paint had been a lot of fun. Though, with the residual glitter in her hair (and the occasional glittery hand print on the banner), someone might be able to tell.

There was one table completely devoted to ice cream (and wrapped in cold spells). The centerpiece was, of course, a giant ice cream cake with a frosted lightsaber on it. Karla couldn't make any guesses about how accurate it was, but there was a greyish hilt and a ~~I was tempted to say red~~ blue beam coming from the front. It was enough to get the point across, dammit. She'd had to explain to the Chilly Boulder guy what she meant by lightsaber anyway. Though he immediately knew who Ben and Tahiri were. The table wasn't entirely covered by ice cream, as Dinah had mentioned bringing some, too.

It's possible that there may be an ice cream shortage at Chilly Boulder tonight. Sorry.

In the kitchen, there was even more food; this time covered in warming spells. Mostly there were pizzas with a variety of toppings, but she'd also gotten some sides from most of the other restaurants in town. Someone wanted to have pizza with a side of lobster bisque and quesadillas? Totally not a problem. There were also a variety of drinks and, stashed away in the fridge, a few steaks and a chicken--raw, of course--for Blind Seer.

As far as she could tell, everything was done. And if not...well, they could cope. Now the only thing to do was wait for the guests to arrive.

...and try not to cut into the cake before they arrived. It did look good.

*Well, I had to tell them it was for you,* Karla protested. *Otherwise, I'd get the reputation of 'female who eats more ice cream than Ben and Tahiri!'*

If you get that reputation, they'll have to open a second store, Tahiri teased, grinning around a slice of pizza.

*And the satisfaction of knowing I singlehandedly paid for their children's education and their summer homes,* Karla added piously.

Tahiri's eyes went wide. You didn't really . . . !

*Not for this,* Karla assured her. *But if I started eating more ice cream than you and Ben put together? I have no doubt.*

Tahiri grinned at her, eyes sparkling with more humor than she'd shown in a while. We could consider it doing a good deed.

*When you report back home, you could list 'assisting with the education of children' and 'stimulating the local economy' among your achievements. The owners would probably write you a letter of praise if you asked.*

Tahiri nearly choked on a mouthful of pizza. In the unlikely event HoloNet News ever wants to interview me, I can list those under my achievements.

*Just remember not to explain how you did that when they ask,* Karla admonished with an audible giggle. *'Eating lots of ice cream' is much less impressive than looking wise and mysterious. I suggest saying something like 'The ways of the Jedi are manifold.' That sounds all kinds of fancy.*

Yeah, I don't think 'eating lots of ice cream' would impress the public much, Tahiri agreed with a wry grin. Not the sort of thing they usually look for in a Jedi interview.

She knew a lot about that despite never being the one interviewed. This is what happens when you grow up around the Skywalker-Solo family.

*Though if you're going for a kind of 'Jedi--they're just like you' angle, I think you're set.* Karla's dimples were visible across the table.

Maybe I should write home and suggest it, Tahiri replied, shaking her head in amusement at Karla's expression. I'd even give you the credit.

*That would be nice,* Karla sent. *This way, if I ever visit your home, I can be feted as the female who saved the Jedi order's image.* She paused a moment to consider. *Unless that would mean a lot of boring state functions. In that case, keep the credit. I'm fine.*

Tahiri popped a tomato into her mouth and grinned. Well, it probably would. The grin turned mildly ironic. Though there's never any shortage of excitement to go with them, either.

*I know what kind of excitement you're talking about, missy,* Karla said, giving her a Look. *Though it would certainly liven up an otherwise boring state dinner, I prefer my salads without a side of laser fire.*

How well was Tahiri's innocent look working right now? (She thought she did it better than Gabrielle, thanks. Gabrielle would probably argue ~~omg selfmodding~~ but Tahiri was sure she was right.)

Hey, I know it sounds crazy but sometimes we're not actually getting shot at!

Not very. Karla had heard stories. Lots of them. Tahiri could probably tell that from Karla's 'nice try' look.

*I almost hate to ask what it is otherwise. Is it poison? I could probably handle poison.*

Aw. Well, it was worth a try. Yes, a try, quotes from Master Yoda be damned.

If you're on Hapes, probably. She wondered if Karla would either find the Hapan Court familiar or maddening, all of a sudden. You could just be -- okay, yeah, there's usually shooting. Or at least being chased.

She'd been getting shot at on and off for seven years. Fun times.

*You people need better hobbies,* Karla sent, shaking her head. *Or enemies who could at least wait until after dessert.*

Tahiri looked at her and shrugged broadly, with a melodramatic faux-sigh. I'm not sure we'd know what to do with ourselves otherwise.

Oh yes you do, Karla mock-glared. *You'd eat ice cream. I'm pretty sure it's in the Jedi rulebook somewhere.*

Might be a little harder to get at home these days with the war, Tahiri noted, countering the mock glare with a smile -- and she really, really was grateful to Karla for this, since smiling so easily didn't happen all that often lately. Maybe when it's over that'll be my special mission. Restoring the ice cream industry.

That totally wasn't the real reason behind the party. Shh!

Karla saluted Tahiri with her soda. *Tahiri Veila, Saviour of the Ice Cream Industry. That's a pretty good title. Just think of all the children you'd be sending to school and summer homes you'll help buy!*

It sure beat Tahiri Veila, Sith Apprentice.

Tahiri laughed and raised a half-eaten slice of pizza in a return toast. And vacations to -- Well. Ithor was out of the question now, sadly. Some of the nicer planets we have left.

That didn't sound disturbing or anything. Not that Karla would be pointing that out any time soon.

*Speaking of vacations, would you like to come home with me sometime? I'm plannning on organizing a visit to Kaeleer over the winter break.*
