The Roof; Saturday Afternoon

There were several ways to indicate fall was upon you. Changing leaves, of course, would be the obvious one. You could look at a calendar, which was just a boring way to do it. Or you could check to see if Chuck Bass was wearing his trademark scarf. Which he was. It truly was the greatest time of the year.

Yep, scarf around his neck and a joint in one hand, Chuck was laid back in a chair reading Les Liaisons dangereuses for about the tenth time. It was the only way he could keep his French in check without, you know, actually going to France.

"Oh thank God, no," she replied with a laugh. "No, nothing like that, just some... personal stuff." A beat. "Good personal, though, not bad. Oh, and I messed up my sleeping pattern pretty badly. Still not entirely right."

"You didn't get married or anything, right?" he asked, half teasing.

Kate looked amused. "Unless there's some cultural difference I don't know about, no, I didn't."

"Well, that's a relief," he said and patted his heart. "Angela did that once and I had no idea what to get her as a wedding gift."

Because he'd been too busy sulking.

"Just because I didn't get married doesn't mean you don't have to give me gifts," she teased, flicking ashes from her cigarette. "My birthday's only a week and a half away, you know."

"Oh yeah?" he asked, interested. "How old are you gonna be? Thirty?"

"Yes, Hannibal, I'm turning thirty," Kate deadpanned with a solemn nod before rolling her eyes. "Sixteen."

"Wow, you're getting old," said the eighteen year old. "Having a party?"

"Not totally sure yet," she replied, shrugging with one shoulder. "Probably not, though."

"Why not?" he wondered. "Not big on parties?"

"Normally yeah, but I don't know... I kinda feel weird about the whole birthday party thing, 'cause I haven't been here that long. It's complicated," she replied. "Besides, I've made vague plans of going somewhere on that day. It's a birthday present."

"Oh yeah?" he asked, smiling. "Gonna share? Fancy date?"

"Not a date." She was pretty adamant about that, for some reason. "And I don't even know yet. The only plan is that we're going 'somewhere else', and he gets to surprise me."

"Trust him to make it a good surprise?" Hannibal asked. "He's not gonna take you like...to play shuffleboard, right?"

Kate chuckled at that particular mental image. "Yeah, I trust him. Or at least I trust him to make up for it, if fails."

"Dirty," he said, unable to help himself.

"Possibly," she snorted, and grinned at him.

"Oooh la la," he said, waving a hand around. "Who is this guy?"

"That's confidential information," she smirked. Confidential information that was kind of on the radio, yes.

"Are you being coy with me?" he asked, amused. "I bet I could find out."

"I'm sure you could." Unfortunately. "So I'd just rather give you the joy of finding out yourself. Where's the fun in me telling you?"

"Because then I could tease you mercilessly!" Hannibal said. Made sense to him!

"...You do realize that's not exactly encouraging me to tell you, right?"

"I'd tease you nicely," he added, "but mercilessly. At least I'm honest?"

"As much as it intrigues me how you could be both merciless and nice at the same time," she chuckled, "the answer is still no."
