Behind the Dorms, Tuesday Afternoon

"Today we will offer you the opportunity of sparring against each other," Leto said when everyone had gathered. "Zack and I will be here to assist you, or spar if you like. The combination of improving your skills and learning the strengths and weaknesses of your friends makes this extremely useful." He smiled. "And fun."

"So," Zack said, practically chirping yet again as he stepped forward to speak, "what we need you guys to do is to pair off, find a spot here on the lawn where you won't get in anyone else's way, and spar. Please, be careful to take it slowly at first. Understand that there are people who have far, far more experience than others in this field. It can't hurt to compare notes first, to try to judge if you're going to be wildly unbalanced or not."

"Exactly," Leto replied. "This is practise and we shouldn't have to take anyone to the clinic. If you have questions or concerns, talk to us."

"Same as if anyone does end up hurt." Zack nodded. "I have potions and healing Materia on hand just in case. Okay guys, have at it!"

Tahiri exhaled slowly and nodded. "Yeah. Pretty much, yeah. And I don't know if I consider my Jaina at home a friend the way I do this one."

Ben reached out and squeezed her fingers. "Is she another workaholic no-fun forgets how to smile Jaina?"

Tahiri squeezed back and admitted, "She's well on the way there. Last time I was home Leia's big project was trying to get her to take a vacation and I don't think it was working too well."

"Well, you do know that Jaina is the only person fighting in the war," Ben said, sarcasm sharp enough to cut things. "The rest of the galaxy will fall apart if she decided to disappear for a week."

She squeezed his hand, extending a wave of comfort. "See why I get along with Jaina here better?"

Ben nodded. "I love that I don't have to explain my family to you," he said quietly.

Tahiri tamped down a brief impulse to be jealous that he had a family, dysfunctional as it might be. "Makes it awfully convenient, doesn't it? Come here," she said, going to pull him into a light hug.

Just a hug. That was all.

Ben really needed the hug, so he held on tightly.

But no kissing! He was quite proud of himself.

Well, it was going to be a kind of clingy hug now that she could tell he'd needed it. "Love you," she reminded him gently. "You going to be okay?"

"Once the weekend's over," he promised. He hadn't let go yet.

So she wasn't letting go either. "The weekend hasn't even started yet. No point in getting yourself too wound up about it before it does, right?"

Ben nodded. "People's plans could change."

"Exactly," Tahiri said, smiling up at him. It was a slightly forced smile, given she was starting to get a little wound up about it herself.

Ben would have kissed her but they'd made a promise. Or a bet. Or something. Instead he sent a wave of reassurance through the Force at her. "It's just family," he said. "It's not a battle."

It was a challenge. Possibly with an ice cream reward eventually.

"Just family," she echoed, "and just for a weekend. How bad can it get?"

Tahiri, don't ever, ever ask these things.

Ben gave her a look that pretty much said the same thing. "You've met them."

Yes. And er . . . yes. "I'm just trying to be the optimistic one here!"

"And I love you for it," Ben said, smiling. "Ice cream on Monday to celebrate surviving?"

Assuming they did -- oh, right, being the optimistic one. So they would.

"I'll buy," Tahiri said by way of agreement. "Force, we're going to have some fun with the timelines on this, aren't we?"

"And that's assuming no one comes for Zayne or Master Durron," Ben said with a little laugh.

Tahiri groaned. "I didn't think of that. Now I'm really glad there's nobody showing up for me." Oh, how wrong she was going to be.

"You can meet everyone else's people," Ben said. "Or hide in your room."

Tahiri reached out to poke him in the side. "I am not going to hide, Ben, what do you think of me?"

Okay, she'd been considering it. Hush.

Ben smiled. "I'd try to hide under my bed if I knew Dad wouldn't find me there."

"This is the price we pay for being Jedi," Tahiri said lightly. "Does your dad at least know I'm here?"
