Second floor common room, Saturday afternoon

After spending the morning reading celebrity gossip mags online, Priestly was all set to be a little more social. He put his kilt on over a pair of ripped jeans, used every dye color in his collection to achieve a banded technicolor mohawk (and a little bit of stripe on his goatee), put in a call to Dinah, and hit the common room to whip up a couple hot subs.

After all, if he was going to go about setting fashion trends, he needed to have something that might draw people in, right?

Yeah, and okay, he was pretty hungry to boot. What? He was a growing teenage boy.

"Jonas, hello," he said, giving Priestly a nod. "I didn't mean to interrupt your cooking. Did you need any help?"

Wait.

"I don't know if I should offer that because I tend to burn toast."

"Hey, toast is totally easy to burn. But, uh, I got this." Priestly shrugged. "It's kinda my thing. You want one? I've got a wide variety of meats, cheeses, and veggie products."

"If it's not too much trouble," Jonas answered, nodding. "But yes, I agree on how easy it is to burn toast. I've just recently learned how to use a toaster and experimenting has birthed...some disasters."

"No toasters where you're from, huh? If it makes you feel better, I know people who've had them all their lives and still have disasters." That's what folks like Priestly were for. "What's your poison?"

"There might have been but I didn't have access. Only the Food Preparation Workers did, if there were any," he said, making his way over to peer at the sandwich fixings. "Perhaps some ham and cheese? It's boring, I know, but I've found I like it."

". . . What did you do when there weren't any Food Prep people around?"

"It never happened," he said and shook his head. "That was their Ass--job. So, that was what they did everyday. Well, every night. Food Distribution delivered in the evening."

"Huh." That sounded like kind of a soul-less way to eat. "So, what, you never got any hot meals?"

"They were hot when they were delivered," Jonas assured him. "It doesn't make a lot of sense, I know. Most of where I came from doesn't. I'm learning that."

It was getting easier as time progressed.

"Hey, it's all good. No one really quite understands me, either."

Of course, that was less based on where he was from than it was based on the fact that he did things like wear a kilt and jeans at the same time and dye his hair rainbow colors.

"There's a lot more open mindedness here though," Jonas said, unable to keep his eyes from flicking up to that hair. It was just so colorful and interesting. He hadn't known hair could do that. "Even if people don't understand, they tend to accept."

"Around here, it's kinda accept or go insane. We all get pretty used to it, after awhile. I take it you're new?"

"Semi new," Jonas corrected, shrugging one shoulder. "I didn't come in with the most recent group of new students but I'm still getting adjusted. My home is a lot more sheltered than here. It's taking time."

"Fair enough. That's probably true for a lot of people. Where're you from?"

At the question, Jonas gave a little exhale that he disguised as a laugh. "A place called the Community. No one's ever heard of it and I suspect no one will ever visit. I wouldn't recommend it."

"It definitely doesn't get points for naming creativity. But at least it's vaguely descriptive."

"There was nothing much creative about that place," he laughed, shaking his head. "I like it better here. Where are you from?"

"Santa Cruz, California. Kind of an unholy cross between a hippie town and a yuppie suburb."

"I've never heard of it." But that wasn't anything new. Jonas hadn't heard of a lot of things. "And I don't really know what those words mean but that's typical for me. Do you like it here better?"

Priestly frowned and thought that over. "Nah. Don't really like it there better, either. Both places are pretty cool."

"Both have their good parts and bad parts," he guessed, nodding. "Will you be going back once you graduate or are you planning on going out on your own?"

"I'm heading back, I think. Might see about getting my own place, but I already got a job lined up and all."

"Oh?" Jonas raised an eyebrow at that. He wasn't quite the age Jonas had been when he'd been given his Assignment but he was still young. "What sort of job, if I can ask?"

Priestly smiled. "Food preparation services."

"Which is why you don't need any help," Jonas said, putting two and two together albeit a little slower than most. "I knew people who did that back home. For awhile, I wanted to as well but then I got a bicycle and...forgot about anything but that."
