Third Floor Common Room [Saturday, Mid-morning]

Trouble with being six, rather than sixteen, was always going to start with the size problem. Mostly the height problem. Everything good always seemed to be kept just out of reach of small hands, and that included a decent breakfast.

Effy didn't really want to starve, but at the same time, there wasn't exactly anyone around to do it all for her.

So she was going to stand and stare up at the higher cupboards, like maybe she could make them relinquish the food in there with just the power of her mind.

Clearly it wasn't going very well.

"Pancakes would be acceptable," Raven said. "Thank you. Is there something I can do for you?"

Awww.

"No thanks," Joan said. "You can play with the other kids while I make them."

"I do not play," Raven said, glancing at the other children. "I do not know how to, and it is not allowed."

Right. Joan had almost forgotten how sheltered Raven was before Fandom.

"You're allowed to play here," she reminded her gently. "Would you like to color?"

She still had the coloring books and crayons she had bought for Jared a few weeks ago.

"Azar would not like it if I played," Raven disagreed. "Playing encourages emotions, and I must not experience those." But there was a little hope in her voice as she went on. "I am allowed to study and read, however. Do you have any books?"

Okay, yeah, this was breaking Joan's heart a little.

"I have books that you can color in," she said. "They're good for little kids and it's not like playing."

Even though it totally was.

She'd never colored in Azarath, and it had never expressly been forbidden, so....

Raven nodded. "I think that would be acceptable," she said.

"Good," Joan said with a smile. "Let me go grab the books and crayons for you and then I'll make those pancakes, okay?"

"Yes, thank you," Raven said. She liked Joan.

Joan hurried down to her room to get the coloring books and crayons and then came back.

"Here you go," she said, putting them down on the table. "You can color the pictures all different colors."

"It is like art," Raven realized. There were many artists on Azarath, though their creations did lack passion since the artists suppressed their emotions. She sat down and picked up a red crayon and began to carefully fill in part of a flower.

Joan smiled. "Yes, it's exactly like art."

She pulled out the supplies she needed to make chocolate chip pancakes before she ended up with a weetiny mutiny on her hands.

Raven glanced up, noticing the chocolate chips. "You are going to put chocolate in the pancakes?" she asked curiously.

"Yeah, chocolate chips," Joan said. "Do you like chocolate?"

"Sweets are only to be enjoyed in moderation," Raven said. "Sometimes we dip strawberries in it."

"I promise I'll add a modest amount to the pancake batter then," Joan said.

"Thank you," Raven said. "I do like chocolate." She switched to a green crayon and began to carefully color in a flower stem, staying in the lines.

Joan started to mix up the batter, keeping a close eye on her friend.

"You're coloring that really well."

"Thank you," Raven said. "It is my first time."

"I never would have guessed," Joan said, encouraging her. "Maybe you can color one for me to hang up in my room?"

Raven nodded. "I will do that. Do you like flowers?"

"I do like flowers," Joan told her. "I work at the flower shop, you know."

"It is good you can find a profession that you enjoy," Raven said.
