Sixth Floor Common Room, Wednesday Evening [WARREN'S BIRTHDAY PARTY!]

Through some miracle of timing, Bobby had actually managed to get everything for Warren's party set up earlier before heading off to Karla's.

Now, though, it was Warren's turn. Hopefully people would still have room for even more food after a BBQ, because the amount of food two brilliant bakers plus one person with access to a very good catering service was impressive.

At least people could work all those excess calories off in the ball pit?

"Cake," she said immediately. "I'm pretty good at pies, too, but cakes are easy and no one ever turns it down."

"That's a very broad assumption," Bod said, amused. "Have you met everyone in the world to determine that?"

"No, but have you ever met someone who's like 'Cake? What? No, thank you, I'll be over here, not experiencing joy through frosting,'" she replied.

"I know people who refuse cake," Bod said but they were ghosts so they couldn't really eat the cake anyway. He didn't say that part quite yet.

"Diabetics?" she guessed sympathetically. "I bet cakes made with Splenda are still good."

"Ghosts," Bod said and waited for her reaction.

There was a pause, yes. And then she added, "Okay, if we're playing like that, vampires don't like cake, either. But they did when they were alive, and I bet ghosts did too."

At that statement, Bod half wondered if Silas liked cake. He'd rarely seen Silas eat anything let alone cake.

"I never asked the ghosts I knew," he admitted, grinning a bit. "They couldn't eat so it seemed needlessly cruel."

Sookie's brow jumped up a little. She hadn't been listening on purpose, but in the heat of cake debate, she'd caught that thought.

She let it go, though. "Poor ghosts. You should ask them. Maybe they can look at cake and feel better."

"Would that make you feel better?" Bod wondered. "Looking but not touching? Or eating, in this instance."

"Comforted, at least," Sookie decided after a moment.

"I don't know, some of those ghosts were rather ornery," Bod joked. "I think they would have tried to throw the cake at me, ability to eat it or not."

"They can throw cake but not eat it?" she asked, raising a brow. "I thought maybe they just can't touch stuff."

"No, because they could touch me," Bod said and shook his head. "It's a confusing way of life. I never saw them eat though so I assume they can't. I did see them touch me. One even punched me."

"Oh, you poor thing," she said sadly. "Ghosts common where you're from?"

"I think it depends on your definition of common," Bod said, shrugging. "I was brought up in a graveyard, raised by ghosts."

"Does everyone know about 'em?" she asked, tilting her head. That was the thing that usually set her world and the vampires apart, as far as she could tell.

Bod shook his head. "No. I was able to see them because of something called the Freedom of the Graveyard. If any other person had wandered by, they'd seen gravestones and...me."

"...what kept you there with them?" she asked, really curious and thus sort of ignoring how nosy she was being.

"That's where I lived," he answered easily. "Both my parents were ghosts. Mister and Miss Owens. I'm their son."

"Um. Were they ghosts when you were born?" she asked slowly. Her parents weren't ghosts, after all. This seemed like a unique situation.

"Yes." Which wasn't a lie, he thought. They just weren't his real parents. He hadn't quite gotten to the part where he'd started telling people about his adoption via ghosts because his family had been murdered. It took some building up to.

"And I promise, I'm not a ghost," he said quickly.

That part came in loud and clear, since now she was sort of listening out of curiosity. "I didn't think you were. You're gonna eat my cake, after all."

"Well, I'd been thinking about it," he said, teasing a bit, "but I haven't actually decided if I'm going to or not. It's quite the decision."

"I make excellent cake. Don't do that to yourself," she advised, grinning.
