The cabins were starting to get to Alex. Sure, he and Griff often got into fistfights or bitch fights or any other type of fights but he'd only had to deal with one person when he was in a pissy mood. And Griff wasn't one to nag or be nosy so it'd been a copacetic situation.

Now, just to stop feeling like the walls were closing in on him, Alex had bolted out of his cabin and towards the campfire with the intention of smoking enough cigarettes to calm himself down. His mood was just fine, for once, but he was not built for cabin living.

At least the sun was going down and taking the temperature with it. Alex found a spot near the campfire, relaxed back against a log and stretched out, already lighting up a smoke and taking advantage of being outside to indulge in his favorite vice.

See, he already felt better.

This whole not being on duty thing was weird, and Rose realised with a bit of a shock that she was unsure what to do with the amount of free time she suddenly had.

Which was why it was a good thing Alex was at the campfire to entertain her. "Can I bum one?" Rose asked, sitting down on a log near him.

"What's the magic word?" Alex asked, already digging into his pocket for his pack. He smirked over at her and waited patiently.

"Butthead," she smirked back over at him.

"That is not the magic word," Alex said but tossed the pack her way anyway. "What're you smoking for tonight? You usually need a reason."

"It could be a magic word," Rose pointed out, catching the pack with a grin. She extracted a cigarette as she shrugged. "No reason tonight. Just bored. What about you?"

"YOU." Glare, Emma, glare. "What was that?"

"I - me - what?" Rose asked, frowning at the glare. "What's wrong?"

"You, that's what's wrong," Emma replied. "I heard you, and don't try fibbing to a telepath, darling. It's rude."

"You heard me do what?" she asked, still totally confused.

Then it hit her. "...you heard that?" She took a breath, not sure she wanted to know the answer. "Did you hear just me or...?"

She got a smile from Didi, who didn't know her well but was grateful to anyone who stopped fighting with Jake.

"You've probably heard those will kill you, right?"

"Usually it's me saying that," Rose admitted, smiling back. "I like to bug Alex by stealing one sometimes."

"I'm not going to stop you," Didi said. "It's not my thing, but I kind of like the smell."

"Fair enough," she agreed. "The cloves ones smell pretty good too if you don't mind the people who smoke 'em being pretentious gits."

"Even at camp I can't get far from your smoking," Griff complained, finding a decent spot to sit on the ground where he could pick at the dying grass. The heat was too much for any living thing to survive.

"No one said you had to stay," Alex pointed out, smirking at Griff. "I think you just can't get enough of me."

"Like I can't get enough of a canker sore," Griff snarked in return. "You watching the sunset or just having a romantic evening with your cancer sticks?"

"The cabins are making me fucking claustrophobic," he griped, making a face. "And I don't do romance."

Ew.

"Could I convince you to share?" Emma asked, wandering over. She was bored and antsy, and Alex was usually good entertainment.

"You could," Alex told her, smiling up at her. "So, convince me to share, dearest Emma. I'm feeling rather stingy tonight."

Emma laced her fingers together and smiled at him prettily. She could be sweet and ladylike when she wanted. Which meant when it was useful.

"Alex, may I please borrow a cigarette, and I'll be happy to return the favor sometime."

"Wow," Alex said, eyes wide and laughter in his voice. He did hand over both the cigarettes and his lighter. "Did that hurt much?"

"Hey." Didi waved a little as she wandered up to the group at the campfire. She wasn't bored, exactly -- she very rarely got bored -- but she was between projects and didn't have a lot to do. Socializing filled the time.

"Anybody else spend yesterday arguing with their laundry hampers?"

"Arguing?" Alex shook his head. "I had to hit a pair of boxers with a fucking book, though."

"My clothes were all ... fresh with me," Didi said. "Which is kind of ironic, since I haven't done laundry in a couple weeks."

Yes, she always wore more or less the same thing. She just owned a lot of it.

"Eventually," Alex said vaguely, shaking his head. "Stupid island. I wish it would just change me into a girl if it wants to act up. That was, at least, fun."
