The Roof, Thursday Afternoon

After saying goodbye to Triela, Karla'd had two options: go to her room and worry or do something, anything else. Since she had pretty much spent the past week doing the former, she'd opted for the latter today. Rather than sit on her bed and brood, only putting on her cheerful face when someone stopped by, she stayed inside only long enough to change into her bodystocking and then practically flung herself into the air.

A few laps around the island and she'd actually been feeling better. The exertion was enough to take her mind off the maenad things and she found herself in much better spirits by the time she came winging back to the dorm roof.

"Depends on who you ask," Ender said, wryly. He'd rather not think about his own hallucinations that week - they were giving him bad enough nightmares as it was. "I had to take on a large crab with a knife because someone happens to be a kriffing Skywalker."

"How big a crab are we talking?" Karla asked.

"About the size of a human, give or take."

She gave a low whistle. "With a knife, huh?" she asked. "I don't suppose you lucked out and the shells were extra soft or they didn't have claws or something handy like that?"

Ender smiled wanly. "The only unexposed space was at the face," he said, and left it at that. "Our concerns weren't as... immediate as that of most of the others."

Karla nodded. She remembered the state Sookie had been in when she returned back from Rapture--two inches away from catatonia.

"I'm glad you had a chance to visit with your friend for a little while," she said. "Less immediate or not, last weekend wasn't a picnic for anyone."

"It happens, here," he said. "And I almost said 'you get used to it', but you don't."

"No, not really," Karla said, shaking her head. "Maybe the little invasions, like alligators or carnivorous vegetables or even the nasty gremlins, but something like that...you never do."

"Though human beings can adapt to anything eventually," Ender mused, fixing his eyes on Karla. "How are things back home?"

Let's not talk about his trauma, please; besides, he was genuinely curious how much of this was escape for her.

Karla looked uneasy. "Morton's letters are starting to hint at things. Lots of rumors, I guess. Nothing concrete, but he's worried about Black Widows. There have been...incidents, he says, but he won't go into much detail."

Uneasiness turned rueful when she added, "And last time I was home, I exploded Mrs. Beale's kitchen. I don't think I'm going home soon."
