Second Floor Common Room, Friday Afternoon

[glacial_queen]

Cream? Check.

Milk? Check.

As many different types of chocolate as they could find? Check.

Enough other various toppings and ingredients to open up a grocery store? Check and double-check.

The second floor common room's kitchen had been transformed. Bowls filled with fruit, candy, chocolate pieces, and other various ingredients were strewn about the counter. Tiny bottles filled with lemon, vanilla, and peppermint extracts lined up like soldiers awaiting deployment. Every available surface in the fridge was filled with cartons of heavy cream and gallons of milk.

In the center of it all, whirring in self-important splendor, was the ice cream maker Ben had gotten for his birthday.

"This," Karla breathed as she glanced around the kitchen one more time, "is going to be epic."

"Honey, why are they in there at all?" she wondered.

"Because the recipe called for them," Karla explained. "Well, okay, it called for vanilla beans, but we didn't have any, and Ben got bored while I tried to figure out how many teaspoons of vanilla extract would equal one bean, so he suggested coffee because he's a little addict anyway."

Aren't you glad you asked, Sookie?

"Vanilla beans and coffee beans are totally different," Sookie said patiently, rubbing her temples. "Oh god, this is like watching a trainwreck."

"Of course they are!" Karla said. God, she wasn't an idiot, Sookie. "That's why we used more coffee beans! They're much smaller than vanilla beans are."

But Karla had dumped half a bottle of vanilla extract in to make up for the lack of vanilla beans, so they were safe on that front!

"How about," she suggested, "you try it first once it's done. Because I bet it'll have a really unique taste."

'Unique.' Yes.

"Why wouldn't I try it?" Karla asked blankly. "Sookie, it's ice cream. There's no way I wouldn't eat it when it's done."

"I just mean before anyone else, sweetie," Sookie amended. "Of course we'll all be eating it. Ice cream is excellent."

"Well, Ben goes first," Karla said. "The machine is his birthday present and I don't want to lose a hand getting between him and the ice cream. But then I go second, because I helped. The rest is up for grabs."

She said as if there was expected to be a lot after she and Ben were done getting their own bowls.
