Second Floor Common Room, Friday Afternoon

Cream? Check.

Milk? Check.

As many different types of chocolate as they could find? Check.

Enough other various toppings and ingredients to open up a grocery store? Check and double-check.

The second floor common room's kitchen had been transformed. Bowls filled with fruit, candy, chocolate pieces, and other various ingredients were strewn about the counter. Tiny bottles filled with lemon, vanilla, and peppermint extracts lined up like soldiers awaiting deployment. Every available surface in the fridge was filled with cartons of heavy cream and gallons of milk.

In the center of it all, whirring in self-important splendor, was the ice cream maker Ben had gotten for his birthday.

"This," Karla breathed as she glanced around the kitchen one more time, "is going to be epic."

Ben was watching the ice cream maker intently. "I'm so glad I didn't have lunch yet," he declared. "We followed the recipe correctly, right?"

Sort of?

"Sure," Karla said casually. "Course we did. I mean, there was that bit with the beans, but we'll be fine."

"I'm sure coffee beans can be swapped for vanilla bean," Ben said, nodding.

Of course, he'd never seen a vanilla bean, but why would that matter?

Ender stepped into the common room.

He stopped stepping.

He knew immediately that he had made a horrible mistake.

To his credit, he didn't run away.

"Ender!" Karla called as soon as she saw him. "You're just in time! Our first batch is almost done!"

Why would you run, Ender? See how proud of themselves they are?

Ben looked up and beamed. "There's chocolate in it!" he added.

Sookie wandered into the common room, thinking that today would just be a normal, wonderful day, as she always did.

It was too late when she noticed who was actually in the common room's kitchen.

"...put the extracts down," she said carefully, holding her hands up. "I come in peace. Karla, you know you're not allowed to cook."

"I'm not cooking!" Karla protested. "Look, the oven's not even on!"

Mostly because they'd agreed that they didn't want to make any of the fancy and complicated flavors at first. The ones that required mixing in a saucepan first would take too long and they were hungry now.

"Besides, Ben is here to supervise!" she said, pointing.

"I don't know if I trust Ben's supervision. Sorry, Ben," Sookie added.

So, the thing was, Jason was a big fan of ice cream. And Jason had neither tasted Karla's cooking, nor been warned about its hazardous effects on the body. Therefore, when he peered into the common room to try to find out what the noise was, he stuck around in the doorway, and didn't run away.

Poor, poor Jason.

"What are you making?" he asked.

"Chocolate Coffee Crunch ice cream!" Ben said proudly. "It's almost ready, too!"

"Did you make the ice cream?" Jason asked. "Like, from scratch?"

Hey, hey! Ben was helping! Why was it always Karla's cooking that got blamed?

...Don't answer that.

"Ice cream!" Karla announced proudly. "And you are lucky enough to get to try some." Since neither Ender nor Sookie seemed to want any.

Weirdos.

"Are you sharing? I don't want to take any if you guys were making it for yourselves," Jason said, having one moment of politeness. He usually didn't say no to free food, but there was a lot more free food here than he was used to.

Tim waved at his roommate. "How's it going?"

"Hey. It's going okay," he said with a shrug. "I didn't have class with anyone who looks like me, so that was kind of a win."

"Whoa," Tim said, looking at the spread. "Are you planning to put Chilly Boulder out of business?"

"Not at all," Karla said. "We have to have someplace we can go when we don't want to make our own ice cream." She dimpled at Tim and waved. "We're just planning on introducing some serious competition."

The entire terrifying ice cream process was probably just about done by the time Tahiri made her way up to the common room after a day spent researching possible sources for a focusing crystal.

"Why," she asked as she came through the door, half joking and half actually very, very serious, "do I have a bad feeling about this?"

"I don't know," Ben said, grinning at her from where he was perched beside the ice cream machine. "I feel fine."

Karla stopped trying to push Ben out of the way to shoot a grin at Tahiri. "Kiss kiss," was her only answer.

Asuna poked her head in the common room, "Hi, what's going on here?"

"We're making ice cream!" Ben said proudly.

"You've arrived just in time to try the first ever batch of Chocolate Coffee Crunch," Karla told her, waving Asuna further in. "Don't be shy--come on and grab a bowl!"

Run, Asuna. Just...run.
