Third Floor Common Room [Monday evening]

Jaime had popcorn, chips and salsa, and candy corn (hey, it was that time of year!) spread out and was flopped back on the couch sorting through a small stack of DVDs. He wasn't entirely sure what he wanted to... Aha!

Giant robots with over-the-top (if somewhat awkward) CGI effects were just what the doctor ordered. Not that the movie was really good, but Jaime wasn't looking for good.

And at least it wasn't the sequel.

Jaime quirked an eyebrow. "Come on, Momoko. You know that's not true."

"Well, I was assuming there was an awesome plot and a super handsome and brave hero who saves the day and gets the really pretty (but still smart) heroine. Or is that what's missing?"

[weldedtomyspine]

"Well, that and the giant robot parts aren't nearly as cool." You know, minor stuff like that.

[heromaniac]

"... Someone actually ruined the giant robot parts of a movie about giant robots?" She blinked rapidly at him, unsure how that was even possible, then shook her head and leaned back again, rooting in the bowl for another candy corn. "I've seen bad robot movies, sure, but that totally takes talent. Especially if it's a sequel to a good one."

"Well, I don't know..." Jaime glanced at the screen. "You think this one counts as good so far?" As opposed to just fun, or... whatever?

[heromaniac]

Momoko stared at him. Again.

"It's evil and good alien robots fighting to find that box thing and then the human kid is stuck trying to save everyone just because of something his ancestor did, and he's only still in school and just wanted a car and a girlfriend. And he's got to hide it all from his parents?" Momoko chuckled. "None of the robots look like painted boxes glued together and I haven't seen one piece of stock footage, and the explosions don't look like bad fireworks. It totally needs a team of heroes, but if you add all the humans together you can sort of pretend."

All of which meant, yes, she did think it was good.

"So just the one minor complaint, huh?" Jaime chuckled. Good to know Momoko's tastes were so easy to predict.

[heromaniac]

"Well," she laughed, "If you want me to get picky?"

"I totally want to know more about the alien planet they came from. The robots seem like they're almost a family and I would love to know more about them. Also more about the leader of the evil robots? The way they talk about him and they're so hateful, it totally feels like there's a story behind it." If they were humans, she'd totally suspect the evil leader and the good leader were brothers or something. Princes fighting for the royal crown, would be AWESOME!

"And also, why does the human girl like the boy hero? There's totally no development, there. I mean, he's cute and he's obviously the hero, but we don't see why she likes him so much."

"You mean you have to be more the cute and the hero to get liked by a girl?" Jaime asked in mock-surprise.

And now, of course, he was going to have to break out his DVDs of the old cartoon. He was willing to bet a ton of cookies that Momoko would like it.

Oh, she would probably demand he produce all his DVDs so she could make sure he wasn't hiding anything else from her.

"Oh, that will totally get you the girl, but it doesn't mean you'll keep her." She frowned. "I wish it worked that way for girl heroes. Although I don't know I would want to date someone who only wanted to hang out with Blossom."

"Yeah," Jaime nodded thoughtfully. "Since he'd clearly be an idiot if he couldn't tell how cool you are. And you deserve better than an idiot."

[heromaniac]

Momoko snuck an arm around and hugged him, laughing. "I'm going to need that in writing, please? In as many languages as you know, just in case."

"So just in English then?" Jaime asked with an amused smirk. Even if he did know more languages than that.

[heromaniac]

"I've been to your house, remember? What was it your mom called you... meeho, right?"

That would be, mi hijo, Momoko.

"And she said, 'no taybourlies' that one time you said something smart about your chores! Totally not English! Even I know that." She elbowed him. "And you never did tell me what a taybourly was."

"Ow!" Jaime rubbed at his ribs theatrically. "It means... you're the best."

No it didn't.

[heromaniac]

She snorted, both at the idea she'd hurt him and at the translation. "I'm sure it does. It was totally the tone of voice my mom uses when she praises us."

"That sort of thing's universal, then!" Uh huh. Which meant that Momoko almost certainly knew what it meant.

[heromaniac]

Momoko didn't sass her parents, thank you very much. But she did occasionally get into arguments with her little sister, so maaaaybe.

"Jaime." She pouted at him. "You're not going to tell me, are you?" Was someone going to have to google? Or, more likely, email Milagro?

"I did." And that wheedling tone was totally going to convince her that he was being honest!

It came close, since he didn't use it often, but...

"Then you won't mind my calling your mom and telling her how I think she was taybourly for putting up with us that week." Momoko leaned forward to exchange her almost empty candy bowl for the popcorn.

"Um..."

"No?"

As long as he could call her first and warn her.

And figure out some bribe to get her to play along. That would be tough.

Or maybe he could not say anything and his mom's natural kindness would keep her from laughing at Momoko?



A really good bribe.

Momoko blinked. "I can? Really? Oh." Maybe there was some family thing she didn't know about that his mom would say that he was 'the best' in a scolding tone?

She ate some popcorn, trying to think of something that would fit, but couldn't. "Well, okay then. I'll trust you. But I still say it's not English. I'm not that bad at it."

Jaime had to laugh at that. "It's not," he admitted a bit sheepishly.

"Espanol. Spanish."

[heromaniac]

"See? I knew it!" She nodded and settled back. "Why don't you ever speak it? I use Japanese sometimes."

"I don't know," Jaime shrugged. "We don't use it all that much at home? Not unless we have family visiting. Or if there's a word that doesn't quite translate into English, you know?"
