The Pool; Thursday Evening [ 11/18 ] -- POOL PARTY!!!

It was finally Thursday! It was finally party time!

And Ariel, not wanting to be a disappointment in carrying the tradition of Atlantican parties onto the land, had gone all out, showing up at the pool as soon as she was finished with Glee Club to get everything set and ready for when the party was going to start. The decorations were slightly insane, and had been...an interesting challenge to put up, but Ariel had managed without falling into the pool too much. And off in an area where the splashing was unlikely to spoil anything, she'd set up a food table with all of her favorite human foods (she was going to do some Atlantican ones, but she'd have to make them herself, and no one wanted that) and a dance floor with a DJ booth for Jono.

How she got all this down here and up was just going to wind up being one of those great mysteries of life, but she knew that hard work and perseverance and obsessive planning had really paid off.

But, of course, it'd be nothing without guests.

Rilla, wearing a super-practical wool swim costume (http://recollections.biz/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/web100700-1-2.jpg), arrived precisely on time for the party.

"Rilla!" Guaranteed scandalous in her typical seashell bra, Ariel didn't seem too bothered as she bounced up to her friend, ready to adorn her with a pretty lei. "Thank you so much for coming, and what a cute dress!"

Why Rilla would wear a dress to a pool party was beyond Ariel, but she wasn't one to judge. Maybe she didn't plan on swimming, which was fine, because that would make the other non-swimmers have more company.

"And your seashells are very...festive!" Rilla finally came up with. "Happy birthday!! How old are you now?"

"Oh, these old things?" asked Ariel, looking down a moment at the tried and true shells, but smiled at them fondly all the same. "And thank you! I turned seventeen yesterday, can you believe it? That's almost eighteen!"

"You'll be married in no time!" Rilla teased. "Wearing long skirts, talking about nothing but jam recipes, terribly boring..."

Ariel snorted a little with her giggle. "I was thinking more like finally being able to claim my independence and going on adventures," she said. "I don't want to stick around at home my whole life like my sisters. But I guess jam recipes wouldn't be too bad."

Said with a scrunched up face to suggest that maybe they kind of would be.

"How many sisters do you have?" Rilla asked, then giggled. "You could ask them for jam recipes."

Unusual swimwear or not, Rilla was getting a grin from Chuck and a brief wave. "Find your puppy owner in the end?" he asked.

"I did," Rilla said, beaming at Chuck. "It turned out that the puppy was my friend Mr. Murdoch and the island had been most unkind to him."

"... Oh." Well, that was-- Well, he felt a little bad for 'aww'-ing at him in his woolly puppy hat. "That happens, I hear," he said after a moment, looking only the slightest bit awkward.

"But, I think not remembering to warn him about it might count as a fail on my fake sibling report card." Oops.

Rilla tsked at him, failing to look stern. "That was an oversight, but the island didn't provide him with a name tag or a collar, so figuring out who he was isn't your fault."

"And at least he found you!" Chuck pointed out. "So. You know. Well looked after for the days he couldn't do it himself." Anyone who would go to the effort of making outfits for a dog seemed like the sort of person you'd want looking after you at a time like that.

"Makes you wonder why we don't all wear tags, though."

"Perhaps I shall make tags for when I assist my first new student," Rilla mused.

Because greeting someone with customized dog tags won't terrify them at all.

It had perhaps been since Vail that Faramir had first and last spoken to Rilla, but that did not make his smile less sincere.

"Hello, Rilla," he greeted easily. "I hope that you have managed to get through the past few weeks fairly well?"

"I have," she said, blushing slightly. "Oh, I have a list of books for you!"

Not including the romance novels she'd discovered last week. She was fairly certain Faramir would not see the appeal in the wicked duke and the beautiful yet strong-willed farmgirl.

Perhaps not, though it was rather uncertain. Maladicta kept insisting he was romantic after all.

"You did remember," Faramir said, pleasantly surprised and his smile widened. "I thought perhaps, with everything that has been going on that it might have been driven from your mind."

"You are doing me a service, it should not be up to you to call upon me to deliver it," Faramir assured her.

"I have... managed. It has been interesting at the least, if not frustrating at times. I would not mind if the next few weeks settle down somewhat, or I might not find the time to actually read your books!"

Rilla laughed. "It has seemed rather hectic," she admitted. "I'm returning home tomorrow for a week's holiday. I hardly know what to tell my family about this place."

Bruce figured that Rilla probably didn't have much reason to go swimming anyway, so he wasn't about to suggest something a bit more practical. "How did it turn out?" Bruce asked. "And when can I have it?"

"It's wonderful!" Rilla said enthusiastically, though Bruce might have a different opinion. "And I can drop it by tomorrow morning before I head home for a holiday."
