Dorm Lobby | Wednesday During and After Classes

There was excitement in the air. Okay, maybe that was just the mixture of Caroline's perfume and fresh baked cookies or just the scent of fresh permanent marker emanating from the sign adorning her table in the lobby.

Her purpose was the same as the words on the poster that had been glitter-fied at the KDG meeting:

Sign up to perform in the Student Council Parent Weekend Recital!
When: SATURDAY EVENING
Where: The COMMUNITY CENTER

With a great big smile, Caroline was ready to do her Student Council duty and chat up anyone who looked in need of some persuasion to participate. Um, not that she was going to be using her special, vampiric talents to fill the sign up list. That would be bad, even if it would mean a seriously amazing show.

Hmm. Maybe she should just stick with the cookie bribe.

"If it wasn't so junior high, I'd suggest an art show, but I really think you should have to suffer with me. Ooh, do you dance?" No, he probably wasn't going to like where this line of thinking was headed.

He raised both eyebrows at her. "Don't even think about it."

"Aww, but I already did!" She reached up to try and drag him down to sit in the spare chair beside her. "It's too late for you to stay out of these events."

"Then let me haul stuff around," he suggested, letting her pull him down beside her. "I'm not made to do stuff in front of crowds, babe."

"Haul stuff? Like carry me around on a dais? That's sweet, but really not necessary." Hopefully he gathered from her tone that she was kidding.

He poked at her thigh. "See if I offer to help again," he teased her back.

"Oh my God, since when was that a real offer to help? That was you trying to get out of this without me frowning at you for the next three days in hopes of making you change your mind." Okay, so the frown was really more of a pout and who knew how long she'd last.

"What? I can help set up the stage or something," he argued. "That was so an offer and more acceptable than making me look like a fool. You can sing, my performance skills are kind of non-existent.

"Only because you've never tried!" Caroline argued. "I bet you'd be awesome!" Or something, not that it mattered.

"Doing what exactly?" he asked her, curious to see what she'd come up with. "Carrying you around on a dias I could manage."

"Well..." Give her a second to think, God. "Um, wolves howl right, so isn't that like singing?"

He stared at her. "I am not howling in front of everyone's parents."

Or her wolf boy friend.

"Oh my God, I just meant maybe you were a better singer than you thought!"

And okay, if he'd been cool with howling, it would have just been that because it'd be kind of adorable in her mind.

Jake sighed and reached out, rubbing the back of her neck. "No, I'm pretty sure that isn't the case. I wouldn't make a good duet partner."

"You're never giving in, are you?" Caroline checked, leaning back against his hand and furrowing her eyebrows at him. "What if I offered you a cookie? Or a personal massage?"

"You wouldn't just give me either of those?" he asked, pouting at her like a sad little wolf.

"Nope!" Caroline gave her head a little shake, blonde waves bouncing against her shoulders. "Those are for the people who sign up."

Jake frowned at her. "You're giving out personal massages?"

No, he didn't think she actually was, it just needed pointing out.

"Don't frown," she told him. "This is not a shady massage parlor here. There are no five dollar happy endings."

"Not even for me?" he asked, leaning over to kiss her cheek.

"Nope, nothing for you." Even if she did hold still to let him kiss her. "Sad, isn't it?"

"Very," he sighed. "Does that mean I should let you get back to work then?"

"If that's what you want to do," she shrugged, because obviously he wanted her to frown and be sorry no one was going to keep her company at the booth.

"No," he replied, his fingers rubbing up the back of her neck. "It's kind of boring inside. I did get to shoot my teacher from a slingshot today."

"That's because I'm down here," she reminded him. "My classes are done. I wish I got to shoot someone with a slingshot. I bet I'd be good at that stuff now."
