Dorm Lawn, Tuesday into Wednesday Night

Okay, so the weather on Fandom was slightly less bone-tinglingly cold than the mainland, but that was really all there was to be said for it. One thing it wasn't, for instance, was ideal weather for anyone to stand around in for prolonged periods of time.

Which was why the Powers That Be had decided it was the exact ideal time to have a fire drill. Loud noise rang through the dorms at exactly 2 AM; good morning, students.

Hope you had time to snag a coat.

"Oh, of course you're injured when there's work to be done," Emma made an effort to keep her tone light enough to cover the fact she might have been wondering if she could punch him in the arm for getting hurt without making it worse. "I don't think there were any squirrels around so your reputation's safe."

The arms were probably a safe bet! No real damage done to them during his last trip home.

"As much as I would love to help you with your hopefully non-existent tent, it'd probably mean tearing some stitches that I need to stay sewn up," Flick quipped lightly. "They're kinda holding me together right now. But, if I weren't like this, I would definitely help with the tent. It would be the greatest tent."

"So what you're saying is that you're really great at pitching a tent," Emma said, trying not to snort. Because like all teenagers making dirty puns, she thought she was exceedingly clever.

"All I need is a little motivation," he said, playing along with her dirty pun because why not?

"Huh, I was under the impression most guys didn't need that much."

Flick shrugged a shoulder. "I tend to like a little...interaction when I'm pitching a tent. It makes the experience better. I feel like there's more bonding and togetherness."

He didn't know if that worked for the pun here but it was early and he was trying.

There was probably some pun she could make involving ropes and pegs but alas, she sill hadn't explored the interesting corners of the internet yet. "So you're only into it for the bonding."

"Depends on the other person," he replied easily. "I only bond well with certain people. If the bond isn't strong, the tent won't be pitched."

He thought about that after he'd said it and decided it made enough sense for him.

Hey, Emma was willing to run with it. "So I should feel special that you'd pitch a tent with me?"

"No, because I am really not a good tent pitching buddy," Flick said, throwing some truth into the silly dirty puns. But, he kept up the light tone. "No one should want to pitch a tent with me. Better that way."

Unless Flick planned on knocking her up and leaving her holding the bag for his crimes, Flick was still head and shoulders above certain of Emma's future choices. "I'm sure you can't be that bad."

Pregnant and in juvie, Flick. Pregnant and in juvie.

Well...okay, he'd give her that one. He probably wouldn't do that.

"There's a lot I haven't told you about me," he said, shrugging. "The most obvious one right now is that last time I went home, I got stabbed twice. I'm pretty bad."

"...the hell, Flick?" Emma was surprised to say the least. "Who decided to do that?"

"Headmaster of a school I was enrolled in so I could get evidence that would nail my father for killing my brother."

Happy times.

"He was kind of a psycho." Understatement. "And I ended up taking him out. I don't regret it either."

See? Bad.

"That's messed up." Oh, Emma, you had no idea. "And if he was stabbing teenagers someone probably needed to."

"He was doing a lot more than that to teenagers."

Flicks scrubbed a hand through his hair and shook his head. Not pleasant memories. Not at all.

"But, it's why I'm not a good...tent pitching buddy," he said, circling back around to that. "One of the reasons. Many reasons."

[Apologies as I might fall asleep soon.]

"Then he definitely needed to go down." It wasn't that Emma was generally a fan of violent solutions, but she knew there weren't anywhere near enough people who gave a damn about kids in trouble.

"You say that like I don't know a thing or two about being messed up myself." Admittedly there weren't any stabbings involved (that she knew about).

"Well, yeah. I mean, everyone's got some issues in this place, right?" he guessed, glancing around. "I mean, do you have some...tent pitching aspirations?"

Why was he still talking about tent pitching?

"Well, not this minute." Because cold, and two in the morning, and stitches. "But I mightn't say no to...cooperative tent-pitching some other time."

When none of those three factors applied.

"Huh."

Flick rubbed the back of his head and glanced around for a few seconds before he looked back at her.

"I probably wouldn't say no either," he added after a second. "Even if I'll still think it's a bad choice. Maybe I'm selfish."

Like teenagers were known for making good life choices.

"If we can't be selfish while we're messed up kids, when can we be?"

Flick chuckled and shrugged a shoulder. That was probably his way of agreeing with her on that one.

"I'll have to tell you about the rest of...well, everything," he said quietly, looking down at his feet. "See if you still wanna be selfish after that."

"Okay," Emma said. "When we've got a more private moment." Because, wow, so not the time and place for deep and meaningful confessions right now.

Yeah, she was right on about that one. He didn't need to be spilling his absurd life story at two in the morning on the school's lawn.

"Yeah. I tend to be around," he said with a brief nod. "And even if you decide not to pitch a tent, I'll still hide you from anyone that might come looking for you. That won't change."

"I can always hide in the tent." Because apparently they'd looped right back around to actual camping.
