The Roof [Monday afternoon]

Four had spent the last week exploring the island, learning the ways out, the places that were easiest to defend, the places that served food (he'd have to talk to the faction leaders about getting his monthly points for food and clothing converted into something he could use here), the places that sold clothing, and most importantly the shooting range and gym.

He was pretty impressed with the facilities, despite Chuck's warnings about them.

And now he was up on the second to last place he had to scout out--the roof--staying by the door and breathing through his fear of heights. After he was done here, he'd check out Selkie Point.

His eyes closed briefly as he worked to calm the pounding of his heart. He'd check out Selkie Point tomorrow, probably. Maybe even the next day.

"Oh, goodness, what a cutie! Hello!" Rapunzel cooed pretty much immediately upon seeing Vitor.

She glanced at Sia with a small, slightly-shy smile. "Is he okay with petting?" She knew you were supposed to check, first, even if this was the first dog she'd ever seen this close.

"He's fine with it," Sia told her. "In fact you're already his new best friend."

And of course Vitor's tail was wagging happily and he was already trying to nuzzle Rapunzel's hand for pets. Demanding puppy.

"Who's a good boy? You are!" It was nice to know that the instant-best-friend thing went both ways, right? Rapunzel was more than happy to give the little guy alllllll the pets he wanted.

"I'm Rapunzel, by the way," she added, sparing a hand to wave at Sia. "Sorry. I would've said hi to you even if you hadn't brought a puppy up here, I promise."

"Sia. And it's completely all right, he tends to take all the attention." Which she was fine with, personally. "You're new?"

"About as new as they come, I think," she said a little self-consciously. "I take it you're not? It's really nice to meet you, by the way!"

"You, too," Sia smiled. "I've been here two years now, hard to believe as that is. I'm a Fandom veteran at this point."

Vitor, meanwhile, had decided that if he and Rapunzel were friends, he could lay on her feet.

That was fine by Rapunzel, who knelt down a little to try and rub his tummy. Puppy tummies were new to her, and it turned out they were delightful.

"Lucky you," she said to Sia, a little envious. "I feel like I'm never going to even kind of get used to this place. Every time I figure something out, something new pops up to be totally strange."

Vitor agreed! He had that happy leg kick going and everything!

"We all go through it," Sia assured her. "Things seem strange, and they always get even stranger until one day something happens or someone tells you they're from someplace you've never dreamed of, and you don't even blink. It just takes time."

"I'm not afraid or anything like that," Rapunzel assured her. "I just sort of feel like my brain's gonna explode with all the new stuff I'm learning about." She waved her sketchbook with the hand that wasn't petting Vitor. "I've had to draw pictures of stuff and people so I won't forget them and look stupid."

It was a big concern of hers.

"You won't look stupid if you forget someone," Sia told her. "There are a lot of new people. No one can blame you if you don't remember everyone right away."

"Yeah, but people like it when you remember their name," Rapunzel said with a shy little smile. "Sia. That's pretty, by the way."

"Thank you. Apparently if I don't shorten it, people don't remember or know how to pronounce it, funnily enough." She didn't think it was that hard.

Rapunzel raised a brow. "It's a nickname?" She was already planning on writing it down at some point, along with a little sketch of a girl with a white streak in her hair and a cute dog, so now she had to know. "What's it short for? Oh, and what's the little guy's name?" she added, scritching Vitor some more because seriously, puppy.

"Marasiah. And this is Vitor," she said. "He's easier to remember, it seems."

"Marasiah," Rapunzel repeated with a sigh. "That's really elegant, but I get why you'd shorten it. I've always wanted a nickname like that -- one day I tried to go by 'Zel' but it didn't really catch on."

Mother had told her it was idiotic, so.

"Hello, Vitor," she added to the puppy, kneeling a bit so she could get at his tummy with both hands.

"Rapunzel's a good name," Sia told her, watching as Vitor barked happily to encourage all the tummy rubs. "He loves you now."

"I'm glad I didn't bring Pascal up here," Rapunzel said thoughtfully. "He's my chameleon, and he gets jealous of other animals. Especially when they're so cute, yes you are."

That last bit wasn't directed at Sia. Just to clarify. Not that she wasn't adorable.

"Reptiles are an entirely different kind of cute. There's really no comparison." Sia didn't really believe that, but she was a diplomat, after all.

"Try telling that to Pascal," Rapunzel said, completely seriously. "He doesn't even like birds."

And she was a Disney princess, so she saw a lot of birds.

"He thinks birds are cuter than him?" Reptile logic, maybe.

"It's an attention thing," Rapunzel said wisely. "And he doesn't like it when other things get it and he doesn't. He's very competitive."

He was a highly nuanced chameleon, you see.

"Apparently so." She'd never put so much thought into the innerworkings of chameleons.

"Yeah, you're much more low-key, huh, buddy?" Once again addressing the dog, yes. "You just love everybody!"

"Have you had him long?" she added to Sia, in much less baby-talky sort of voice.

"About a year and a half. He was much smaller to begin with." Now he tried to take up the whole bed if she even allowed him at the foot of it.

"And probably a lot less ferocious!" The way Rapunzel said 'ferocious' as though it had a W probably said more about her than about Vitor's supposed ferocity, really. "He's adorable. Did you bring him from home?"
