Animal-Balancing Contest (evening, FHT - first floor lobby)

Rory arrived in the lobby balancing a tank with a wee turtle in it against one hip, a box from J,GOB in the opposite arm, and a flying puppy on a leash leading her.

She tied Vladdie to the leg of a table, set Yoda's tank and the cake down, and looked around to see what she still needed to set up.

[~~Yes, even crack-addled ideas like this need OCD threads. Wait for 'em.~~ They're up, but play on the contest itself won't start until 5:30 EST.

ETA: And yes, it originally said it was in the afternoon. This is now set about 8:30 PM FHT.

Lana is returning to her room after the WHSG meeting and, seeing a lot of activity in the front lobby, stops to see what's going on.

A hand appeared. "Herb Saunders. Pleasure."

Lana looks up at clearly Not!Angel and giggles as she shakes his hand. "Mitzi Heffenpfeffer. Pleased to meet you, Herb."

"You as well, Mitzi," he said. "You're not with the Green Bay Heffenpfeffers, are you?"

"I should think not!" she says archly. "Wouldn't be associated with them if my life depended on it. I'm one of the San Francisco Heffenpfeffers, if you please!"

"Far be it for me to insult family," 'Herb' said, "but I would happen to agree with your assessment. 'Frisco Heffenpfeffers are the better branch of that particular tree. If you don't mind my saying so, Mitz."

"It's good to meet such a discriminating gentleman as yourself," 'Mitzi' replied, much appeased. "What brings you to this neck of the woods?"

"Here for the animal balancing," 'Herb' said. "My dog Steve's quite the head balancer. He would not have missed this for the world."

"Really?" she replied, looking quite impressed. "And he's such a young thing. It's nice to see that not all young animals are lazy ne'er-do-wells! And head-balancing... Challenging choice!"

"His ma said he should go for accounting," 'Herb' said. "But I says to her: Mabel, I says, let the boy follow his dreams."

'Mitzi' shook her head. "Well, I can't say Mabel's wrong. Accounting is a nice safe profession. But on the other hand, a career in the performing arts doesn't carry quite the stigma it used to. And there is good money to be made in it."

She sighed. "And if as you say it's where his heart is/// how can one stand in the way of that?"

"My feelings precisely," 'Herb' said. "If he's happy, then who needs riches? Money is not everything. Long as you've got your health, and a good center of gravity."

"And how is your health? And center of gravity, if it comes to that?" 'Mitzi' asked. "If I may be so bold, you're seeming quite chipper. Not, of course that I would have anything to compare it to, being as I have never seen you before in my entire life."

"I am feeling as well as one can for a Monday," 'Herb' said. "Certainly well enough to spend time with friends, if I was to have friends here. Which I do not, as I am a tourist."

"Had a little case of the Mondays myself earlier, but I'm better now," 'Mitzi' said with a smile. "Too bad you don't know anyone here, but as you can see we're fairly welcoming to strangers - especially ones with as fine a dress sense as yours. That shirt? Exquisite."

"Why thank you," 'Herb ran his hand down the front of it. "I am told it brings out my eyes."

"Certainly makes other people's eyes pop," she replied with a bit of a grin. "Er, that is, why yes, such a lovely shade of, what color are they again, dear?"

"Brown, my good lady," 'Herb' said. "Just like the good earth below. Not that I'm much for farming. No green thumb."

'Mitzi' checked her own thumbs carefully. "Nor do I, it seems. Which is lucky, as I'm afraid green might clash with my outfit. Besides, we Heffenpfeffers prefer to hire others to deal with any activities involving dirt or the like."

"Understandable," 'Herb' said. "I myself am in sales."

"Really? and what sort of a, um, 'line' are you selling? ~~Other than the obvious, of course.~~" she said looking very interested.

"Refrigerator shelving," 'Herb' said. "With a sideline in freezers."

"Now isn't that a coincidence!" Mitzi exclaimed. "Why, I was just saying to my Raoul the other day, 'Raoul,' I was saying, 'Our refrigerator shelving is horrendously out of date. There *must* be something more fashionable we can get for it!' What a stroke of luck running into you here!"

"How indeed fortunate!" 'Herb' said. He patted himself down as though looking for something. "I am sadly without my brochures, or I would sing to you the virtues of the ST-2000 model, fresh off the factory floor."

'Mitzi' looked a little taken aback. "Well, obviously we wouldn't want to talk business *here*. That would be a little crass, don't you agree? Although, if you did want to drop me by some of those brochures later, I would be very pleased to look at them."

"None about freezers, though. I'm not fond of them." She leaned in a little closer as if to impart something in the strictest confidence. "They keep the food very cold, you know. Like ice. Most inconvenient when you want to use something right away."
