Third Floor Common Room, Tuesday morning

Walter was cooking breakfast and making a list. So far he had a remarkable array of eggs cooked in different styles, a loaf's worth of toast, far too many sausages, and a few boxes of cereal sitting out next to a gallon of milk.

You'd think he was cooking for more than himself. While he worked, a small black puppy scampered at his feet apparently trying to stab a paper ball with a pencil held in his teeth.

The list was for Mary Poppins, who had somehow thought that he'd volunteered as her Teacher's Assistant.

He knew there had to be more than that. He'd keep working on it.

Nadia leaned on Walter's arm. "Okay. I talked to Jamie last night. What are you writing?"

//I am very sorry, I have no frogs here.// He made a mental note to get Furrball a frog or two.

"How did that go?" Walter asked, looking her over for an indication of how she was doing and forgetting the list for the moment.

"He thinks that if he just keeps himself from duplicating, everything will be okay. Thing is, just because that thing can't get out, doesn't mean it isn't there. He has to make peace with that."

Walter shook his head, knowing that was much easier said than done. "I don't like that I know that your roommate has it in him to hurt you like that."

"I'm not kicking him out of the room."

"I thought as much."

Nadia scowled, then looked back at the list again. "So. You're writing something. What is it?"

"Yesterday Miss Mary Poppins informed me that I was her TA for Creature Languages. She wants a list of all the pets people have in the dorms and their people." Walter slid the list over to her. "Do you know any others? Fish and frogs and the like count, too."

"Xander has a frog, but he's leaving, I think. And someone had a had a squid-thing, but I don't know who. Oh! I think Parker might have a rabbit."

"Esme," Walter nodded and finally wrote down some of the other animals people had told him about. "I don't think Xander counts, unfortunately, and the squid is Callisto's. Isn't she leaving, too?"

Nadia shrugged. "I guess so. Those are all the ones I can think of right now."

Walter looked over the list. That didn't look bad. "I just need to find out if any of the new students brought pets and I think I'll be able to give Miss Poppins what she wanted."

"So how did she decide you were her TA?" And why did he keep letting people decide things like that for him? Maybe she should have just informed him sometime early in their friendship that they were dating, and he would have accepted it?

"Apparently because I had an A in Creature Languages and told her that I had liked the class and found it useful."

Alas, Nadia lacked the Voice of Authority that would have made that possible.

"Ah. Well, that should be interesting for you, at least."

"I'd say so. The first thing she did was measure me and she actually had blood in her office to feed to Pup."

"Wow. And what do you mean, 'measure' you?"

"She had this tape measure that measured length and, I don't know, personality? She measured Pup and it gave his length and said that he was 'demonically sweet and adorably homicidal.'"

"That's . . . accurate? Assuming I'm understanding the words right. What'd it say about you?"

Walter was still vaguely amused by the tape measure's assessment of him. It wasn't as though he hadn't earned the moniker "Angel of Death."

"It said 'Outwardly, fastidious and well mannered. Inwardly... Total menace.'" With total menace in bold.

Nadia grinned. "Yeah, but that's why I like you. What do you think it would say about me?"

Was that a trick question?

Walter looked thoughtful. "Maybe something like 'almost as beautiful on the outside'?"

Yes, it was blatant flattery. "I have something in my room for you if you can wait a moment."

Nadia wasn't fooled by the blatant flattery, but smiled anyway. "Okay, this doesn't have anything to do with not-a-fruit bats our conversation the other night, does it?"

Walter grinned and excused himself to fetch the flowers (http://pics.livejournal.com/walter_n_wires/pic/0019ke6a) he'd gotten for Nadia after their conversation about not-a-fruit-bats the other night.

Nadia snagged some eggs and found a bit of ham to give to Furrball while she waited. Then she blinked, then smiled. "Wow. . . ."

There wasn't a whole lot more she could say.
