Outside the Danger Room, 7th period

Holding a large stick with a piece of poster board attached wasn't the easiest thing to do with one hand. Which meant that Blair's big protest sign today spent a lot of time leaning on the walk next to him when his arm got too achy.

He felt bad though and intermittently would call out the sign's message loudly. "Give Peace a Chance!"

Having been warned by Sam, John was not surprised to find Blair parked outside the door of the Danger Room when he exited at the end of the class.

He studied the sign for a moment with his arms crossed over his chest. "That brins back memories," he all but drawled wryly.

"Good ones?" Blair asked hopefully.

"Not particularly."

"You get protested a lot in your line of work?"

"This is the first time actually," John replied. "But I fought in 'Nam."

"Really?" Blair leaned forward, interested. "How was that? What branch of the armed forces were you in? Where did you fight? How long were you there?"

John raised an eyebrow. "And if I answer those questions am I going to get another lecture on how I chose to be a murderer for being a soldier?"

"Well, no. I think that solider is a bad enough thing on it's own." Blair said and then hit himself with his good hand. "Uh...about that, I have a letter to read."

He pulled a sheet of paper and cleared his throat and began reading. "Mr. Winchester,

I wanted to apologize for my comments last week where I called you a murderer. I should have been more respectful to you. I also apologize for my sign which accused your students of the same thing and I will be thinking more carefully about the accusations I make in the future.

I'm really very sorry about bringing up your wife. It wasn't intentional and I wouldn't have said anything if I had known.

Blair Sandburg" Blair shrugged and looked up. "Or actually, me."

If anything John's eyebrows climbed even higher as he listened to this. He noticed that Blair's apology didn't actually take back what he said, but it was still more than he had been expecting. "Apology accepted," he said with a bemused smile.

"Thanks, man." Blair was sure that he was being sneaky in his apology. "So could you answer my questions now?"

John paused, but finally offered grudginly, "I was in the Marines and was in 'Nam for two years. Standard tour of duty."

"Do you suffer from Agent Orange exposure or flashbacks?" Blair bounced as he asked.

"No, and generally that's not the kind of question people are that cheerful about asking," John pointed out.

Blair paused in his bouncing. "I wasn't cheerful about the fact that you might have flashbacks, man. I just like finding things out."

"If that's so, I can reccomend some reading material on supernatural threats and the damage they've caused." He smiled faintly. "You should know what kinds of things you're endorsing should be left alone."

"Great!" Blair nodded. "I checked out a lot of stuff online and have been researching but I'd love to see your material."

Blair pulled out a pamphlet on peaceful resolution to conflict. "Maybe you can read this over and find out some ways to supplement your classes on death with peace."

John didn't move to take the pamphlet. He sighed, rubbed a hand over his face and made one last attempt to get this boy to see sense. "As I told the class last week, we're only focusing on how to track down and deal with supernatural entities that are a threat -- that means they're out there actively killing people. If I -- or someone like me -- didn't stop them, they'd keep on killing. What I do, what I'm teaching here saves lives."

"You're teaching them to go out and hunt down demons that fit some threat criteria that you set down." Blair shook his head and used his one good arm to flail.

"If you didn't teach them then they wouldn't go out looking to be heroes and they wouldn't put their lives in danger. You're actually risking lives!"

"Because of course demons aren't out there killing innocents who don't even believe they're real, much less have any knowledge of how to protect themselves or stop them," John said, an edge creeping back into his voice. "The demons aren't going to stop killing, stop hunting humans, just because we stop hunting them."

"How do you know that, man?" Blair frowned. "Maybe stepping back out of the stabbitykilldie mindset and letting everybody just live in peace will show you something new."

"I know because I read the obituaries, I see the bodies, I talk to the grieving families," John told him bluntly. "I know because I was living in peace once and a demon came into my home and ripped my family apart."

...and somehow they've ended up on the topic of Mommy Winchester again.

"Maybe it was karma?" Blair said.

Okay, that was it. To imply that Mary somehow had earned the way she had died... John held onto his temper by his bare fingernails. "Right, Mr. Sandburg, I hope you didn't have any plans for this Saturday because you'll be spending it in detention. You can use the time to figure out why what you just said was so offensive." He gave a smile that was really more a baring of teeth. "Consider it karma."

"You're giving me detention for talking about this?" Blair gaped. "Are you kidding me, man?"

"I'm giving you detention for being so over the line of respecting your teachers it's not even a distant spot in the rearview mirror," John told him. "You don't like hunting, that's your perogative. You want to discuss the subject, fine, I'm all for rational discussion. You start suggesting that my wife somehow deserved to be pinned to the ceiling of our son's nursery and set on fire, you get detention."
