Third Floor Common Room, Saturday Evening

After finishing her homework for the week, Dawn went to the common room and decided to indulge herself. She had a bowl of rainbow sherbet and was flipping through channels.

Oooh, kittens! Or, well, lions, but baby ones. She watched happily, although an occasional "awww, kitty..." escaped.

Sam just rolled his eyes and snickered. "Did you have fun being a big strong man in your muscle car?"

"You know sometimes I wonder if your name is really Samantha," Dean told him. "Dude, it's the Impala."

"Dude, it's a car," Sam replied. "I swear, sometimes you and Dad treat it like the fourth family member."

"You're telling me you wouldn't feel anything if something happened to it."

"Of course I would, but only because the Impala is our sole means of transportation, and it would be a bitch to try to find a way to get around while it's being fixed, if something happened to it away from here."

Dean stared at his brother. "Dude, it's so much more than a 'means of transportation.'"

"Okay, I guess I have to agree with that," Sam admitted. "Seeing as how it's also our means of weapon storage, and that backseat's been my bed more times than I care to count."

"That's what I mean," Dean said. "That car's as close to home that we've got."

Sam shrugged, but nodded nonetheless. "I guess. But I just can't get as attached to it as you and Dad are. That's why it's going to be yours someday, and not mine."

"What do you get attached to?" Dean asked curiously. He thought he knew, and he was pretty sure that Sam was more attached to the car than he admitted to himself, but he wanted to hear what Sam thought.

"I don't know," Sam admitted. "I don't think I really have anything that I'm attached to in the same way that you're attached to the Impala." It didn't sit well with Sam that he could say that, but he wasn't sure how to change it. "I guess you could say I get attached to books, but that's not the same."

"Yeah, I guess not." He wasn't going to ask because he knew the answer. He wasn't going to... "It's different with people though, right?"

Okay maybe he was going to ask.

"What do you mean?" Sam asked. "Is what different with people? Getting attached?"

"Yeah," Dean mumbled.

Sam looked at Dean seriously, trying to figure out what he was getting at. "Actually, in a way, I think getting attached to people is as hard for me as getting attached to object. For the longest time, it's just been you and Dad, but I think it's pretty safe to say Dawn's on the list too now. Why are you asking this?"

Dean shrugged, feeling stupid. Because dammit, he knew the answer, he shouldn't need his brother to tell him that yeah, they were attached.

"You're not worried I'm going to get more attached to Dawn than you, are you? Because she's just my...girl that I'm dating and don't know how to classify yet."

"What?" Dean said, looking at Sam. "No, of course not. I want you and Dawn to... get attached if you want to. I'm not... It has nothing..." He ran down as it was slowly sinking in that maybe it was something. "Maybe a little?" he finally admitted.

That just made Sam look more serious. "Maybe a little what? Dean, what's wrong?"

"Nothing," Dean said quickly. "I'm just being an idiot. Really."

"You mean more of an idiot than usual?" Sam smirked, hoping for a little levity. "Seriously, what's wrong?"

Dean shook his head. "It's stupid. All that talk of you not being attached to anything and shit... I mean I know you and I are... but I guess I just need to hear it." He gave a half shrug. "Like I said, it's stupid."

Finally realizing what he meant, Sam sighed and shook his head. "I meant I'm not attached to anything inanimate, like a car," he said, managing only a hit of exasperated sarcasm. "You're my brother, Dean. That kind of comes with an automatic attachment."

Dean gave a half shrug. "Said it was stupid," he muttered. Though yeah, it did help to hear it. He really hated his brain sometimes.

"Well, you're allowed to be stupid every once in a while. Just don't make a habit of it, or I'll have to start making fun of you," Sam said, smiling.
