Fifth Floor Common Room, Monday Evening

"Can you hand me the ginger?" Ronan asked, as he ground some spices with a mortar and pestle. "The fresh, I mean." The fragrant smells of cooking curry were already pervading the common room, and probably making their way through the rest of the dorms. When Isabel handed over the asked-for ginger, he added some to the mixture in the mortar, and went back to grinding. "Thanks. I hope this isn't too spicy for whoever else comes along," he added.

"I think we've got it under control," Ronan said, smiling. "But you're welcome to have some when it's ready."

"Thanks," said Hoshi, making herself comfortable on the couch.

"Have you had much Indian food before?" Ronan asked, as he began chopping cucumber for a raita.

"Occasionally," said Hoshi. "We get it in Japan like everything else, but usually it's been tweaked to make it more palatable to the Japanese taste."

"How so?" Ronan asked. "Would that be less spicy? Or is it just a focus on substituting more traditional Japanese foods?"

"They'll find ways of substituting with Japanese ingredients, like serving curried tofu or fish," explained Hoshi.

"Huh," Ronan said. "Actually, I had a fish curry once. It was pretty good."

"I'm sure it's out there," said Hoshi. "But in Japan, it's more like the Thai curries than the ones you get in India. They probably have the same origins, though."

Ronan nodded. "Quite possibly," he said. "What other kinds of food do you like? If you have trouble finding them around here, I can always give them a try at some point."

"Other than Japanese food, you mean?" asked Hoshi with a smile. "I love enchiladas."

"Hmm. I can definitely try that," he said, grinning. "Enchiladas... I'll have to try them, definitely."

"I've been meaning to make soba noodles too. It was one of my grandmother's specialties, but somehow I just haven't gotten around to it," added Hoshi.

Ronan nodded, filing that away in his head, too -- there was always opportunity to try more cooking, especially now that he had access to a kitchen again, rudimentary though it was. "I'll have to make something traditionally Irish at some point, too," he said. "I haven't really done that since I got here."

"That would be really nice. I don't know if I've had anything Irish before," said Hoshi.

"It's nothing too special," Ronan replied. "Lots of potato." He grinned. "Lots and lots of potato."

"Then it should definitely be different from what I'm used to," said Hoshi.
